Cannula bandit. Resident Doctor. Trade Unionist. Current Interests: Baby, Wife, Regional Anaesthesia. Opinions are of my own.
If any MP wants to shadow me on a full set of on-calls, I’ll happily arrange for it. Come see what we do as resident doctors.
'We continue to sacrifice our youth, our mental health, and our happiness, on the altar of this profession.' James O'Brien receives a 'powerful' message from a doctor ahead of the strikes at the end of the month.
At today's RDC meeting, we’ve voted to go ahead with strike action. Last week when we met @wesstreeting we were open to finding solutions to restore pay and improve working conditions. Today, we still do not have a credible offer on the table @Melissa_S_Ryan @RossNieuwoudt
I urge my consultant colleagues to please - download the microguide.
🚨 NEW: The BMA will go ahead with its resident doctor strikes beginning 7am on Friday, saying there is “no credible offer” on the table
Clearing out your locker from a hospital you loved working at hits right in the chest.
We’re at Stage 5 of Malnutrition in Gaza. This is irreversible. I can’t believe I’m writing these words.
When I signed up, we had a final salary pension, pensionable CEA awards, free accommodation on site for year 1 doctors and unemployment among doctors would be beyond anyone’s imagination.
You knew what you were signing up for.
So you've got the pharmacists doing the doctor work. You've got the PAs doing the clinic work. And the doctors fixing the ward printers. Are you sure you know what you're doing? Patients just want to see a doctor. Stop fobbing them off with anything but.
Today, Starmer kicked 4 Labour MPs out of the Parliamentary Labour Party for opposing welfare cuts for the sick and disabled. Those MPs will now be immortalised in history as heroes of our class.
Now we have a situation where Doctors’ Assistants, unqualified to diagnose, are paid more than actual Doctors. Even with full pay restoration, Doctors would still earn less than these assistants, exposing a ludicrous disparity in the healthcare system’s wage structure!
People say the UK can’t be like Norway 🇳🇴 because of “population size.” The truth is, Britain’s real problem isn’t size. It’s obedience. 🧵
1. Shaming doctors for doing literally anything nice for themselves that costs money (Going to a restaurant etc) 2. Paying doctors £17/hour
What's one thing that's normal in the UK but weird everywhere else?
Finally had some time to go through some of the nutters that replied to my last tweet offering an MP to shadow me. All faceless anons getting brave and promoting their overlords agendas. Still not a single MP taking up my offer though.
I would bet good money the average MP couldn't last a 10 hour night shift as an A&E registrar
This would be amazing. I would volunteer for this if my patients and employer consented. I have a long day and three nights coming up this weekend. Come and be a Resident Doctor for an On-Call and then tell me we should wait for pay restoration. Also, bring a change of pants.
9 out of 10 doctors voted for IA if we need to. But we shouldn’t need to. 28.9% is misleading: - counts an uplift not yet received - much lost to inflation - the Tories gave almost half Reality: our pay is 21% down on 2008 levels. Let’s hope our talks are productive.
The Health Secretary Wes Streeting says he's 'pleased' the BMA have agreed to his offer of talks to try and avert strike action. 'If strikes go ahead everyone loses: Doctors lose, the NHS loses, patients lose, and the public loses,' said Streeting.
Looks like I made it into a hit piece from @Telegraph criticising pizza &pay events. Cuz you know, how dare a union rep engage w members and... feed them delicacies like @Dominos_UK's Mighty Meateor?! P&P events aren't proof we're gonna strike again, our pay erosion is. 🦀🍕🦀
“We’ve never gone on strike” Okay, Robert… Circa. 1975:
'They have a duty to consult their members and they didn't.' Lord Winston explains why he's quit the BMA over resident doctor strikes, stressing they've taken the 'nuclear option'.
Our pizza and pay restoration events made it to the national newspapers. If anything, it shows how much groundwork BMA Reps are willing to do for our members. We are the most engaged workforce with our Trade Union. It’s best for everyone if Wes comes to the table and sits down.
