John McDonnell
@johnmcdonnellMP
Labour MP for Hayes & Harlington and Former Shadow Chancellor.
A year ago today I had the Labour whip suspended for voting to scrap the 2 child benefit cap. Scrapping the cap would lift 350,000 children out of poverty & reduce poverty for another 700,000. Would I vote again to scrap it? Too right I would.Definitely, I will every chance I get
"The Cunliffe Report is a joke. It protects water profiteers, screws over billpayers, and will do little to reduce pollution in our rivers and coastlines. The only solution is for water to be taken into public ownership" My new column for @theipaper inews.co.uk/opinion/the-cu…
In Poplar and Limehouse, we are clear: refugees are welcome here. In the face of relentless demonisation and targeting, we continue to stand with migrants for their rights to safety and dignity. It’s the far-right and their hateful ideology that are not welcome here.
Just over a day to go till the end of the crowdfunder for our Donetsk oblast rescue workers appeal, and we're past target - at £30,450 (in addition to direct donations of equipment etc). But the more we raise the more we can help! Please donate + share crowdfunder.co.uk/p/support-fire…
In June last year the Foreign Office judged that there was no risk of genocide in Gaza. Today I asked David Lammy if the government now believed there was a plausible risk of genocide but he refused to answer & not even agree to his officials doing an assessment.
Said in Commons people find it incredulous inquiry wasn’t allowed to look at public ownership & £100 billion cost of nationalisation cited by minister refuted by independent economists. Asked that record of tax avoidance by water companies be tackled. theguardian.com/business/2025/…

In a week’s time Heathrow Airport will publish its plans for a 3rd runway. It has recently confirmed that 5530 homes will be rendered unliveable, meaning about 16.000 of my constituents losing their homes. Most, except the Chancellor, know it’s a white elephant, aviation’s HS2.

There’s an interesting debate largely led by the Left that is challenging the Treasury orthodoxy on several fronts, especially posed by Prem Sikka. This is another contribution. Britain’s quiet billion-pound subsidy to banks and ‘shadow’ banks – Labour Hub labourhub.org.uk/2025/07/20/bri…
At the conference on Labour one year on, Prem Sikka explains in detail the profiteering by corporations in our economy & sets out a programne of tax reform that would provide the scale of resources we need to tackle poverty & fund our public services.

Andrew Fisher starts our conference on Labour Government: One year On. with an analysis of the poling on both Labour’s standing & individual policies. The conclusion is that if there was an election tomorrow Reform would be in government. That’s why political change is so needed.

Bins overflowing in Hayes. These 2 are top of Church Road/Uxbridge Road & outside Hayes station.Reporting to council for action. Let’s try get on top of this mounting problem. Thank you to the council workers who are working hard to tackle this growing problem @Hillingdon

I wake up in morning to listen to doctors in Gaza describe the appalling injuries inflicted on starving children by Israeli soldiers & drones & then hear the lies of the IDF but hear nothing from my own government. Neither a word of condemnation nor of action to be taken. Why?
A reason Chris Hinchliff had Labour whip suspended was for moving amendments to Planning Bill. After pressure from the environment groups Chris was working with the government has now had to accept the amendments. Well done Chris & sorry you had to lose the whip to achieve this.
This looks like really positive news. Very happy to be proven posthumously correct and see many of my concerns addressed. Well done to @WildlifeTrusts, @WCL_News, @Natures_Voice and everyone who fought for proper nature protections in planning.
Before people, including Labour Party spokespersons, comment or decide upon Diane Abbott’s fate, could I suggest that they actually listen to Diane’s interview on BBC Refections in which she forthrightly condemns antisemitism & discusses the different forms of racism.
The Guardian view on Labour’s control freakery: the party once tolerated dissent. Now it treats it as treason theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

This shows that Brian Leishman has the strength of support from his local Labour parties. His suspension is clearly the result of honestly representing them in Parliament. Strange interpretation of party democracy. It will only breed unnecessary resentment.
Thank you to both of my Constituency Labour Party’s and the wonderful members in them. Your support and solidarity shows the very best of our movement 🌹✊🚩
