It’s not the BMA “undermining the trade union movement”. It’s a Labour Prime Minister, writing in the Murdoch press, urging junior doctors to break with their union leadership. That’s a direct attack on trade unionism. Solidarity with @TheBMA and junior doctors on strike.
Keir Starmer: Resident doctors should break ranks with the BMA leadership. The industrial action that starts on Friday is in no one’s interests and medics should not follow their union down its dangerous and destructive route, he says. thetimes.com/article/3fdcd5…
I’d love to know what your favourite champagne is too Lord Bethell ? @JimBethell Do I need to say more @drchriscarson ?
That's very inspiring, Chris. What sort of champagne is your favourite? Are all doctors entitled to champagne? Are taxpayers's entitled to champagne, or is it just for doctors?
I’m supporting @TheBMA Because trying to fix the NHS without improving pay & conditions for health/social care workers is like trying to refill a bath without the plug Recruitment, retention, burnout - this is the crisis Resident doctors deserve better. So does every patient
Apparently the plebs aren’t allowed champagne

Doctors DON’T have a final salary pension Doctors DON’T get their exams paid for Doctors DON’T get overtime Doctors DON’T get their equipment paid for Doctors DO pay for their own training Doctors DO pay for their own stationary Doctors DO earn less now than 2008 in real terms
Now do from 2008…..
We've updated our explainer on doctors' pay in England 👨⚕️ It includes this analysis of real-terms changes to resident doctors' pay since 2010/11. We also explore longer-term trends in doctors' pay, and how it compares with the wider economy. Read here: buff.ly/sFnmx8x
How did I get through the entirety of undergraduate and postgraduate medical training without hearing about ‘the medical model’? It’s just a word salad used to excuse poorly trained & expensive pseudo-doctors replacements doing work that should be done by doctors.
"there was no compelling evidence that PAs were safe to work as doctor substitutes in primary care" Did we read the same report?
Comparable professional haven’t seen anything similar in terms of reduction in pay. Quite the opposite. As evidenced by IFS and dDRB reports.
My most senior employees have had a 25%ish pay cut over the last 2 years due to poor results in difficult economic tomes. In the private sector a substantial proportion of remuneration is via bonuses rather than basic salary, making it easy to cut pay when times are tough.
Bored of this talk of a mythical golden pension I can access my private pension from age 57 & my kids can inherit it I can also control contributions & mitigate against AA charges My nhs pension is accessed at 67 & can result in 6 fig tax penalties today & my kids cant inherit
Do you think the rest of us with a trade didn’t have the same bloody issues? You start at the bottom, doing the most work - for the worst pay. But as you learn, and you go up into a specialism etc - you’ll earn the money. You’ve also got a bloody golden pension. You aren’t…
Damn you best me to it
Monopsony. If you are here to lecture professionals, get the terminology right
Yes They are entitled to better pay and T&C
I’m happy to have a service that has a better satisfaction rate than the NHS right now, which stands at 24%. 12 strikes in 3 years is entitlement.
When I signed up, we had a final salary pension, pensionable CEA awards, free accommodation on site for year 1 doctors and unemployment among doctors would be beyond anyone’s imagination.
You knew what you were signing up for.
You can move to Australia or Canada and double your salary instantly or you can work for the NHS and have weirdos shouting at you for going to a nice restaurant. Tough choices for a junior doctor.
Would you like to take credit for our pay rises since the 1950s too? You added 4.05% to the existing 8.8% (conservative) pay award from 23/24. The 24/25 DDRB average 8% was *already* written when Labour came in. You said you agreed with the premise of full pay restoration.…
Another brilliant address from @DrPhilBanfield at #BMAARM25 @TheBMA have been very lucky to have him and the new energy he has brought to our #TradeUnion on #PayRestoration and many other areas. Thank you Phil for all you do 👏👏👏
Well done to the PA & the employing practice who put a 35 year old on steroids for ‘PMR’. Did absolute wonders for her T1 diabetes.
You don’t get doctors pretending to be speech therapists, nurses or physios or pharmacists? So why is it okay the other way round
I can do most things an astronaut can. Except go to space.
