The discussion about swapping pensions for pay for resident doctors makes it sound like this would be easy! The NHS pension scheme is for all staff so the impact of changes on different groups varies (eg opt-outs due to COL vs AA tax), but the rules apply to the whole scheme
Just spoke with a colleague who asked me to have a "quick look" at his RPSS. Had never paid AA charges as "noone sent him a bill" and his accountant "didnt ask" about this. Obvious multi year charges If you are ignoring your RPSS. Don't. Free help may be available too 👇

So let me get this straight. No jobs for graduating nurses, no jobs for graduating midwives, no jobs for newly qualified doctors. Either find the money for jobs, or shut the courses. Stop selling young professionals lies of a career in the NHS. theguardian.com/society/2025/j…

Given this is the 2nd Nuffield Trust “explainer” that starts the clock at 2010, ignoring significant pay erosion that started in 2008, I can only conclude this is politically motivated.

Think it’s deeply unfair on the BMA to say that the 08/09 year is “cherry picked”. Their argument is one centred on pay erosion which is when this started. Conversely I don’t think it’s unfair to say the use of Aug 2010 as a baseline is “arbitrary” as it’s when a dataset started…

Pensions are deferred pay. Reducing future pensions to fund jam today will not address full pay restoration.
