Education, Research, and Advocacy for Musicians
The politics of the music industry are complicated, but many music industry issues make more sense when you look at them through the lenses of labor justice and media justice. What's good for working musicians is also good for communities. We're in this together.
A positive development
Congratulations @IvorsAcademy, @RhonddaBryant, and @bpi_music on agreeing to per diems for songwriters at writing sessions with Major Labels! As streaming risk/return grows, it’s less feasible for writers to ( effectively) pay to write. Per diems help balance things out.
Tough privacy regulations like this are also a key part of improving the user experience for ticketbuying.

BREAKING: The EU Commission has released a mandatory template for AI developers to disclose training data. Unlike the Code of Practice, this is not optional. It could have global fallout, as rights holders abroad might use it to sue over copyright. digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/exp…
If you’re feeling down about politicians who have been captured by big tech and want to let AI companies steal work with impunity, remember that the public overwhelmingly disagrees with them (in a ratio of eight to one). Legalizing IP theft is a hugely, hugely unpopular policy -…
The lazy neoliberal view is to assume that new products are introduced in response to consumer demand. Brian is neither lazy nor neoliberal, and his explanation is very helpful.
To wit: Big tech platforms have AI features automatically added and enabled, as the authors demonstrate — but they're usually really onerous or even impossible to disable. As such, most users just don't.
Ask your local record shop if they get the same wholesale price on new CDs/LPs as Amazon. (Spoiler alert: they don’t!)
13. Anyway, don’t listen to ideologues with an economics degree. Go talk to someone who runs a small store. Ask them if they get the same price as a Walmart or a Target or a Kroger. Look at a price sheet. Also, use common sense! /end
Looks like Trump is trying to back-door the state AI regulatory ban that was rejected in the Senate 99-1. From today's release of the AI "action plan":
Very bad development for the many musicians who rely on the ACA.
1@WSJ front page article highlighting analysis the paper asked @KFF to complete, showing that ACA BCBS plans in IL (+27%) & TX (+21%) increase in premiums & other plans in WA, GA and RI all showing 20% increases in premiums for ‘26. The median…. share.google/muOhYlberO0jeF…

The Baldwin amendment to spare public broadcasting FAILED 48-52.
Even while some legislators try horse trading to preserve funding for rural stations as the Senate votes on clawing back previously approved funding for public media, a poll surfaces showing a majority of Americans support federal funding for public radio. loom.ly/ttdMSjs
Call your Senators NOW. Your voice can help stop the most serious threat to public media in years: bit.ly/4eOwuZb Can't get through? Look up their direct numbers: bit.ly/3gqAmmU #ProtectMyPublicMedia
Calls to the senate right now could still save public broadcasting.
RESCISSIONS LATEST: - As of this am, the votes were NOT YET solidified in the Senate to move forward with the pkg. - But that is different than there being a strong group of hard no's. - My reporting: senators are trying to figure out what changes could get the largest group. 1/
