Join us please in saving this historic airfield which graces the local landscape and has served the country well in times of war and peace since 1917.
What we hoped would never happen, happened. Absolute devastation from the collapse of the Grade-II* Listed Hangar 3 last night. We call on the authorities to assess & urgently protect the remaining structure before it is irreversible. 4th pic is 22/12/2023! Just 30 days earlier.

The feast of St #Osmund (d1099). As Bishop of @DioSalisbury he built the Cathedral at Old Sarum, gave it its constitution & initiated the liturgical ‘Sarum Use’. The new @SalisburyCath inherited this legacy. His remains were translated here in 1457, the year of his canonisation.
It was absolutely fascinating to visit the underground city at Naours today. Linking the carved out signatures of fallen Diggers and Tommies to the pictures at Vignacourt seems a worthy cause. An amazing story....
What a fab photo sent to me by one of my @CWGC volunteers Anthony, who looks after war graves in #Wiltshire. A robin fledgling blending perfectly with its environment, sitting on a lichen covered headstone in Redlynch. Anthony looks after 4 war graves here, all dating to #WW1.
The brick walls of Hangar 3 still stand, hopeful of future rejuvenation. The remaining original hangar brick rubble piled up in the centre. We as a community encourage the owner to continue with the restoration, especially as Listed Building Consent was approved over a year ago.

Today is the anniversary of the Dambusters Raid, 17 May 1943. Here's footage of a Mosquito testing the Highball variation of the bouncing bomb on heathland at Ashley Walk, New Forest. One of the Dambuster Lancasters did actually crash at Ashley Walk during tests (no fatalities).
Oh gosh, that is a saddening sight. Having visited Bicester Heritage when it first opened up the whole site is unique and archetypal of a 1930's expansion-period RAF station.

This timber-framed merchant’s house in Gloucester, dating back to the late 16th century, has been restored. 🙌 26 Westgate is the largest surviving historic timber-framed townhouse in England and has been on our #HeritageAtRisk Register since 2012.

The first Royal Canadian Air Force unit to travel overseas was 110 (City of Toronto) Sqn, arriving at their first operational base, Old Sarum, on the night of the 25th Feb 1940. Such great interest that Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Trenchard visited to inspect the Sqn.
The photo was taken by Flt Lt George Rex Shepley in 1938 while based at RAF Old Sarum, who is seen here on the left with his two brothers Frank and Douglas. Sadly, George's 16 Sqn Lysander P9127 was shot down over Dunkirk on the 31st May 1940, & was awarded posthumous DFC.
A lovely photo of a Westland Lysander flying high above @SalisburyCath, which is engulfed in a low cloud base. Most definitely pre-war, late 1930's. #SaveOldSarum
