“Nothing is lost, and all in the end is harvest” (Edith Sitwell).
“Amid all these challenges, one thing remains clear: it’s not spreadsheets that change lives but teachers, working together to create a culture of love, structure & high expectations.” Indeed. In praise of @TeachFirst by alumnus #AidanSadgrove. schoolsweek.co.uk/undervaluing-t…
Lest we forget…. “Tommy” memorial at Haydon Bridge. “There but not there” commemoration of the fallen. A reminder that “war and the pity of war” is not only about history but is a reality of the world today.

An Anglican-Lutheran ecumenical good news story from St Michael’s in Headingley where our Leeds daughters worship with their families. @LeedsCofE churchofengland.org/about/building…

“In the world of contemporary classical music, where complexity and empty virtuosity often dominate, Pärt stands apart. His music eschews spectacle in favour of silence, simplicity and spiritual depth.” theguardian.com/music/2025/jul…
Letter about Israel’s actions in #Gaza, signed by over 300 rabbis and rabbinical students worldwide, many from Israel itself and from the USA. As a person of faith, of Jewish descent, and a lifelong friend of Israel, I would sign it if I could.

On #StJames’s Day, thoughts turn to the Cathedral of Santiago, the shrine of the saint & beloved destination of pilgrims from all over the world. #Ultreia!

Feast of St James the Great. Sculpture outside the church at Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier in the Nièvre. The commune is on one of the pilgrim routes to Compostela.

Lost and found: HMS Hind - not Golden but still a lucky ship. Even when she was wrecked off Orkney in a storm in 1788, all hands survived. theguardian.com/science/2025/j…
“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.” @BarackObama theguardian.com/us-news/2025/j…
“We need to say with frankness and clarity that this policy of the Israeli government in #Gaza is unacceptable and morally we cannot justify it. There can be no future based on captivity, displacement of Palestinians or revenge.” theguardian.com/world/2025/jul…
The risen Christ greets #MaryMagdalen in the garden on Easter Day. Window in Simonburn Church, Northumberland. Today is St Mary Magdalen’s Day.

#Comma butterfly (polygonia c-album) with its distinctive notched wings. Time was when the comma was a rare visitor so far north. But that’s no longer the case with climate change, though I can’t remember having seen one in our garden before.
