History lover, trustee Map of Australia Trust - a WW1 chalk badge; work for @hiwfrs_control & @CWGC #EyesOnHandsOn. All views my own.
What a fab photo sent to me by one of my @CWGC volunteers Anthony, who looks after war graves in #Wiltshire. A robin fledgling blending perfectly with its environment, sitting on a lichen covered headstone in Redlynch. Anthony looks after 4 war graves here, all dating to #WW1.

We'd like up-to-date information on #Llanddewi Brefi #WarMemorial in #Dyfed which received a grant of £930 in 2018 from WMT alongside funding from @cadwwales. Could anyone check the condition, take photos and add the info to War Memorials Online at warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/253920
Give a face to the names at #TyneCotCemetery 📣 Do you have a photo or story of a relative who died in 1917 and is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery or commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial? Please get in touch with our research centre. passchendaele.be/en/research-ce…
Can you help us by checking the condition of today's #WarMemorial case, #Kilmore - Sleat on the #IsleOfSkye. We'd really appreciate it if some photos and up-to-date information could be added to War Memorials Online at warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/145021
Lots of hard work by some of my @CWGC volunteers at Avonview Cemetery in #Bristol today. We checked, photographed & cleaned or tidied every single war grave here, 140 of them. A mix of WW1 & WW2, with many private memorials in amongst the Commission headstones. Great work!

Today was a War Graves Week tour of Locksbrook Cemetery, Bath in superb weather. Lucky to be joined by 2 EOHO volunteers and members of the @CWGC team who look after the plot, thank you.🙏 Tomorrow is Sutton Veny & finally Tidworth on Thurs 8th May, so feel free to pop along.
#AnzacDay2025 observed today in Wiltshire. Thousands of Australian soldiers spent time at Hurdcott Camp during #WW1, they carved the Map of Australia on the chalk downland above their camp, a memory of home. Many never made it back and are buried locally. We will remember them.
In our quiet corner of #Wiltshire, UK we will remember the Australian soldiers, based at Hurdcott Camp, who carved Australia into the hillside during #WW1. They marked Anzac Day in 1917 as we do today. #AnzacDay2025

Living my best life here in Italy, exploring ancient history and eating lots of delicious food (and drinking a little wine...) Herculaneum yesterday, @pompeii_sites today and Positano to see the buried Roman villa on Saturday!

A real privilege to be part of a small tour group shown 'behind the scenes' at the latest excavations @pompeii_sites by @pompei79 today. Fascinating to hear Sophie discuss the findings and see the excavations in progress. How I wish I could spend more time here! Thanks Sophie!

A fantastic find just now - a new sketch map of Hurdcott Camp! Private Geoffrey Rose was at Hurdcott in 1917 and wrote his memoir in 1930 based on his war diaries. This map was drawn from memory but is remarkably accurate. His memoirs and diaries are held @statelibrarynsw

An amazing amount of work carried out today on the historic Map of Australia chalk badge which dates back to #WW1 Thanks to everyone who came to help!

The #WW1 chalk badge depicting the Map of #Australia having a tidy up in advance of #AnzacDay2025 The badge was carved into a Wiltshire hillside by Australian soldiers who were camped in the fields below. Nothing today remains of Hurdcott Camp except this chalk emblem.

Volunteers needed to help maintain a chalk badge in #Wiltshire dating back to #WW1. The Map of Australia badge was carved into the hillside by Australian soldiers based at Hurdcott Camp, near the village of Compton Chamberlayne. Help us maintain this unique feature! #volunteers

The Menin Gate - now revealed in all its glory again 🙌 The scaffolding is down, and the memorial is lit up every evening. Come see it for yourself and discover the stories behind the names on For Evermore. 📷Eric Compernolle
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway DFC – Last of ‘The Few’. We reflect not only on his sacrifices, but the sacrifices of all those who served & fought in WWII. Paddy, thank you for your service. Per Ardua ad Astra raf.mod.uk/news/articles/…
Poppies return to the Tower of London 🌺 To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, some of the 2014 ceramic poppies will feature in a new commemorative installation within the Tower's walls. 6 May - 11 Nov 2025 bit.ly/TowerRemembers…
When walking the #ypres battlefield recently I discovered this private memorial with a story of unimaginable suffering. So a few days later I made a special visit to pay my respects at Private Henshaw’s grave in @CWGC Dozinghem. #ww1
Volunteers such as Helen do a fantastic amount of work checking on @CWGC graves in their local churchyards and reporting any issues. Spring is in the air!
Beautiful morning to start my checks after this winter. These are from Edington Priory Wiltshire @HelenR864 @CWGC
