In February, I saw @michaelbrowni19 present the results of PAX-D, a randomised controlled trial of pramipexole in treatment-resistant depression Like many in the audience, I was blown away by the results (link in bio)

Large cohort study: stopping cannabis is much more dangerous as it's linked to psychiatric intensive care admission jamanetwork.com/journals/jamap…
Systematic review and meta-analysis: Stopping antidepressants leads to slight symptom increases compared to placebo, but these symptoms are not clinically significant and do not include mood changes. ja.ma/4eI7oeo
They need to correct this typo ASAP. I’m pretty certain that that dose isn’t 37.5 mg. 🚨🚨 @sciencedirect sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Pramipexole surpassed amantadine/ quetiapine in new RCT of 150 with treatment resistant #depression as aug: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40659070 Quetiapine (100 mg) and pramipexole (0.375 mg) underdosed, See 7/4 post for better study of pramipexole in TRD at 2.5 mg/day.
New study of over 120,000 #clozapine therapeutic drug monitoring samples finds #smokers may need lower #plasma levels than nonsmokers for treatment-resistant #schizophrenia. Adverse drug reactions appear earlier in nonsmokers, particularly in women. 🔗 journals.lww.com/psychopharmaco…

Important work from @LukeJelen. The opioid system is involved in ketamine's antidepressant effect - well powered study with insight into the mechanism. Esp for ketamine responders, unequivocal reduction in efficacy when pretreated with naltrexone
1/ Just out in @NatureMedicine : we show the opioid system modulates ketamine’s effects in major depressive disorder, with naltrexone pre‑treatment reducing acute glutamatergic activity and acute antidepressant effects. nature.com/articles/s4159…
CBD is good right? Errr maybe not... In this RCT, I gave high doses of THC 🌿 to people with schizophrenia. Pre-treatment with CBD did not reduce the effects... but doubled them! 🤯 Sometimes I'm not sure that science is for me 🤡.
Excellent article from @TheEconomist highlighting the interrelationship between hormonal factors and mood disorder, particularly in mid-life.economist.com/science-and-te…

Excellent blog post by @jacobkimmel on why pharma progress has slowed down over the last many decades, and why some people are optimistic about a big speedup over the next few years. Eroom's Law (coined by @jackscn) says that the number of drugs per billion dollars decline…
Almost 3% of pregnant women take antidepressants. Is that a risk? Do antidepressants cause bad outcomes for kids? Short thread🧵 Firstly, they do not cause mental disorders. Using siblings as controls, there's no significant effect of antidepressant usage during pregnancy.
Unironically, I really enjoyed this episode youtube.com/watch?v=SDWZa_…
All this chit-chat about antidepressant withdrawal when 50% of psychiatric inpatients are at risk of cannabis withdrawal syndrome...
Cannabis is addictive and the withdrawal syndrome can have serious clinical implications. But since its onset is slow and the symptoms overlap with those seen in acute psychiatric disorders, doctors often miss it. Check out my latest study here:👇
In February 2024, I wrote Scientific Reports about a published meta-analysis claiming that mindfulness interventions affect neural plasticity, 'cementing the neuropsychological basis of mindfulness-based interventions'. Paper was retracted yesterday—here a process summary.🧵
