Today makes two years of having a Twitter account. I'm glad that 244,400 of you have decided to follow me in that time, and it's hard to overstate my astonishment that so many would even want to in the first place. So, thank you, and here's the last month's review of posts!
This new BMI PGS shows evidence of a Wilson effect, where it becomes more powerful going into adulthood. Makes sense: there are large family effects on BMI prior to adulthood.
Congrats to R. Loos, J. Hirschhorn, & colleagues developing a new polygenic risk score for obesity. Very interesting that it predicts response with weight loss across 2 lifestyle intervention RCTs nature.com/articles/s4159… @NatureMedicine My comments in @nytimes…
“We first establish that much of what drives biologic patenting is the desire to block entry by competing biosimilars” Raising the costs of this sort of strategic patenting (ex: harberger tax) seems like a better way to lower the returns to drugmakers than price controls.
The recent approval of Casgevy, a CRISPR ex vivo gene editing treatment for sickle cell disease, in the UK inspired me to write this post (nature.com/articles/d4158…). Some thoughts on the famously discussed time gap between genetic discovery and FDA approval--a weekend read.…

🧵Now available! My paper with Ashruta Acharya and Alek Psrurek on the most generous engagement with the most influential "model" of degrowth. TLDR: It doesnt hold empirically. It predicts the opposite.
What makes this worse is that, not only are people using AI to generate their text, they're also learning to write like the AI. Huge numbers of people have added Alt+0151 to their repertoires and AI-ified their own words.
Just got invited to take part in an expert elicitation study about generative AI's impact on cognition and education and the invitation letter had THIS GODDAMN LINE.
Neat: Nulls and small effects on child outcomes from giving parents relatively substantial amounts of cash.
🚨 New NBER working paper: "The Impact of Unconditional Cash Transfers on Parenting and Children" This paper estimates the effects of receiving a $1,000/month guaranteed income for 3 years, compared to a control group receiving $50/month, on children and parents in the US. 1/
