Harrison Professor of Medicine at the Univ. of Virginia. We study respiratory innate and adaptive immunity post infection or vaccination including COVID-19.
We @WXQ_Micro are thrilled to share our new manuscript @ScienceMagazine , in which we uncovers a critical role for macrophage peroxisomes in lung repair after viral infection. Could targeting peroxisomes be the key to mitigating long COVID?! science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
As a new PI who is trying very hard to make it, 6 is limiting. This includes all co PI grants as well. I never use AI. But have already submitted 4 grants this year and would like to resubmit 2 since none are fundable first try. So it makes it hard for junior faculty to survive
Does anyone have any clear opinions on this? It does not say you cannot use AI, but be careful when submitting @NIH grants. You cannot submit more than 6 in a given year. I wish I could submit 6 in a year. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/n…
#ChromatinPower #WhatADay! After our paper @ImmunityCP (free👉 authors.elsevier.com/a/1lS0g3qNrU-i…) happy for our tiny contribution to @XuZhouLab @RMedzhitov @younggouu &co amazing paper @CellCellPress showing pH controls inflammation via chromatin remodeling! #EpigeneticPower! Our #NewPaper @ImmunityCP shows that endogenous oxidized lipids decide whether host survives or dies during #sepsis, #ARDS, or Staph infection! Ox lipids bind & inhibit #AKT, boosting inhibitory H3K27 methylation via EZH2, blocking #IL10! authors.elsevier.com/a/1lS0g3qNrU-i…
Something that is prob not known to PIs outside the US: we have to cover our salaries from grants. At med schools, usually 50-99% of it. Even teaching positions only cover 9 months salary. So you need to find ~$100-200k/year JUST for your own salary. Thus needing multiple grants.
Sweden: one per year, and you cannot have more than one grant at the same time
In a large-scale proteomic study of biological aging of 11 organs, the biological ages of the brain and immune system emerged as strong predictors of healthspan and longevity, according to a paper in @NatureMedicine. go.nature.com/4eFghFq
Proposals in Congress would cut NIH funding, weaken ARPA-H, and dismantle NSF’s innovation engine. But advocacy works. Your voice matters. The deadline to act is July 21. Sign on. Email Congress. Reach out. We must do everything we can to protect science. Details below.
🗨️ “Vaccines have done more to improve public health than any other medical intervention.” A Viewpoint focuses on cancer vaccines and the future of immunotherapy—analysing trials, different vaccine approaches, and how the next generation of cancer vaccines can help improve…
My lab is recruiting! We study respiratory immunology, chronic lung diseases and aging. Come join us @UVAimmunology at the beautiful UVA campus and Charlottesville. Please help spread the words.

NIH announces end to funding for animal-only studies. This is potentially huge and needs clarification. Current NIH leaders may not understand the imposibility of making discoveries in fields like Immunology without in vivo models: drugdiscoverytrends.com/nih-announces-…
Sadly, this would mean the likely end of the field of Immunology. Things like the blood brain barrier, entry into tissues, process of memory generating and inter organ connections cannot be studied on a chip or using AI. So sad to see our dreams of discovery die..how to continue

Do you think the Warning Coordination Meteorologist position at the Austin/San Antonio office was important? He left in April as part of the DOGE cuts which offered early retirement to reduce the workforce. It’s now vacant, part of the strategy of reducing staff through…
I was feeling so depressed on July 4th that I decided to think about something even worse to take my mind off it: why haven't we heard much about H5N1 lately? open.substack.com/pub/rasmussenr…
The July issue of Science #Immunology is out! This month's cover features a study that demonstrates how the transcription factor #SpiB regulates #TuftCell activation within the gut by inhibiting c-Kit and TSLP signaling. Read this research and more: scim.ag/3TiI6tB
