Terrific @nytimes op-ed by @econJaredB this morning. It's not just that OBBBA skyrocketed the public debt, it's also the anti-growth strategies (e.g., ultra-high tariffs) that exacerbate the problem. nytimes.com/2025/07/09/opi…
This is how it's done. Bravo to @RKSlaughterFTC for standing up for democracy and winning! Thrilled to she's now able to return to applying her grit and persistence to protecting consumers and competition.
Excited to be heading into the office this am! Top of the to-do list: calling a vote on restoring the Click to Cancel Rule. It’s time the FTC gets back to protecting consumers from real abuses like subscription traps that cost Americans countless hours and millions of dollars.
"An Urgent Warning from Texas": Join us on Tuesday, July 22 for a critical and timely conversation with @BetoORourke and @NormEisen, moderated by CAP's @NeeraTanden, about how we can defend our democracy in the states—and what could happen if we fail to act.…
Trump admin cuts to R&D funding for NIH, NSF, etc are attacks on the innovation pipeline. They may have long-lasting damage for economic productivity growth and will derail future scientific discoveries that could boost health and prosperity. From @amprog americanprogress.org/article/attack…
New @The_Budget_Lab tariff analysis incorporating the 30% Mexico & EU tariff rates, which, like the rest of last week's letters and the 50% copper tariff, go into effect August 1. In brief... 1/10
Trump's tariffs will cost the average household $2,400 per year, estimates the Yale Budget Lab. And they take a bigger chunk out of working class paychecks. The Admin hasn't released its analysis, suggesting it didn't do any, or its numbers are worse. budgetlab.yale.edu/research/state…
Parts of the Republican budget bill are less about fiscal responsibility and more about taking away our constitutional rights to bodily autonomy. For @TeenVogue, Amprog’s Kierra Jones explains: teenvogue.com/story/trumps-b…
Hawley voted for the biggest-ever Medicaid cut, yet pretending he brought home the bacon. He called the requirement for Medicaid expansion enrollees to face out-of-pocket costs up to 5% of income a "hidden tax on the working poor," and he voted for it to start in Oct 2028.
Sen Josh Hawley called Medicaid cuts "morally wrong" & "politically suicidal." He said the "big beautiful bill" would eventually force rural hospitals to close. He called for a tax policy that is more fair to workers and families than corporations. So why'd he vote for this?
This is a terrible economic outcome. In my research (links below), I've shown that the subscription cancellation problem is big and leads to significant overpayments. The click-to-cancel rule was poised to make meaningful progress on this problem. Requiring firms to make it…
Just in: FTC's new "Click to Cancel" Rule, set to go into effect next week, will not go into effect. Eighth Circuit vacates the entire rule.
It's truly pathetic that a Treasury Sec is using a public account to launch ad hominem attacks on a former Treasury Sec. Clearly Bessent can't counter @LHSummers facts. Clearly the WH is so worried BBB is a political disaster they forced their toady Treasury Sec to attack.
Today, former Treasury Secretary @LHSummers showed why he was forced to step down as president of @Harvard: a lack of humanity and judgment. 1/4
If they pass this legislation, it's our job to remind Americans every day that the only way to undo the truly predatory provisions in this horrifying bill is to elect both a Democratic House and Senate. That's the best leverage.
Trump and Congressional Republicans' One Big Beautiful Bill has officially passed. New piece from @amprog looks at 10 things you may not know about the bill. americanprogress.org/article/10-egr…
We still don’t even final estimates for: -how many people lose health insurance -how many people lose SNAP -who wins/loses and by how much -total Medicaid cuts -total health care cuts -total SNAP cuts Because knowing that didn’t matter to the people who supported it
Trump to CPAC in 2013: "If you think you're going to change very substantially for the worse, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security in any substantial way. And at the same time you think you're going to win elections, it just really is not going to happen."
why Nancy Pelosi wants Congress to "throw a punch. for the children," explained here by @kennedy_andara and Kyle Ross of @amprog americanprogress.org/article/the-on…
