I've always used this account to tell WNC's story through the lens of weather and maps A comprehensive Helene analysis will take years to complete, and I'm anxious to get started. I'll be releasing a new website in the days ahead to share all of my work and document our recovery
Water is DEEP in portions of Chapel Hill this evening. Paige’s photo in the upper right is across from the Aldi/Trader Joe’s shopping center. Sunny day comparison here ⬇️
Mail trucks submerged, some houses flooded, roads with flash flooding that is still rising in Chapel Hill, NC. First responders do have rescue boats on standby near University Place it appears. 1. S Estes Drive /Willow Drive. 2, 3, 4. Rt 501/15 & S Elliott Rd
The first dashes of pink and orange in the in the land of the fightin’ Nizols. Rhododendron season should ramp up nominally over the next 10-14 days in the highest elevations of the Appalachians. 📍Roan Mountain, TN
Tree loss along rivers and streams is one of Helene’s compounding disasters. We lost so much tree cover after the storm during cleanup efforts. This has major impacts on our aquatic habitats! Comparison of tree cover along the Swannanoa River before and after cleanup ⬇️

We really need to get better at forecasting & communicating high impact rain events Need to get away from leaning so heavily into NBM mean & we should refine our flash flood warning criteria. When the public sees a dozen or so each yr, hard to know which one to take seriously
We’ve still got a ways to go in Mebane/Central NC where 4-6” of rain has fallen this afternoon & evening, sparking flash flooding. #NCwx
HOMES FLOODING in Mebane, North Carolina, from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal right now! @tornadopaigeyy @BryceShelton01
The floods in Texas are numbingly heartbreaking. All of us in Western North Carolina are in sincere prayer and share in mourning. Texas had our back and we have theirs.
Horrific flooding has been unfolding in Texas since Thursday night. Hard stuff to see and read…
BREAKING: At least 13 people killed, 23 girls missing from summer camp after flash flooding in central Texas
There's a lot of bad news in the NOAA budget release, and yes there are going to be negotiations over the next few months. But what's baffling to me is the complete elimination of the OAR labs, especially NSSL. Like, no one in Oklahoma is going to stop that from happening?
Career update... I stepped into the Lead Geospatial Analyst role at @monarchweather this month. I've been a part of this incredible team since 2023, and it's a privilege to now head up our development initiatives. Looking forward to sharing more of our work in the months ahead!

It looks like GOES captured the entry of a meteor(ite?) over Atlanta. Seeing reports that it may have reached the ground in SC.
Did anyone else just see that fireball / meteor over Greer / Lyman? Looks like the thing might have made it to the ground!
Confession: I started fall foliage work over the weekend. Helene soured my passion for tracking fall colors last year, but I’m ready to get back on that horse. We’re starting early this year so we can roll out forecast improvements for Fall 2025.
Two months from now, we’ll be tracking the first fall colors of the season 🍁🍂 Hang in there y’all!
Morning clouds over a sea of flowers. Roan Mountain, NC this morning 🌸
Peak rhododendron bloom in Roan Highlands with the gents. One of the best blooms I’ve ever seen, and the trails are remarkably quiet. These guys will post the photos—I’m the weirdo who showed up without a real camera.

Took a trip above 5000’ on the Blue Ridge Parkway for the first time since Helene today. It’s too quiet up here for peak rhodo season. Come visit!

The @pisgahinnNC toured the slide repair near Ferrin Knob 3 (btw Pisgah Inn and Hominy Valley entrance) A fall opening date for this stretch is possible; nothing confirmed at this time Link: facebook.com/photo?fbid=109…
