Delighted to write a piece in today's @nationalpost about recent changes in the application of Canada's foreign investment review laws and how they raise bigger questions about what those laws should aim to achieve: business.financialpost.com/wcm/b29e51cc-a…
"I do not propose to read the book for I really now only read with great difficulty and prefer to stick to Scott or Dickens."
A moving letter from Harold Macmillan to Margaret Thatcher about the publication of "Their Trade is Treachery" by Chapman Pincher. His "invariable rule of saying 'no comment' seems one sorely missed in public life today...
This evening, 56 years after the Apollo 11 moon landing, I spoke with the astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Together we shared the memory of a historic feat, a testimony to human ingenuity, and we reflected on the mystery and greatness of Creation.
For the 3rd time in history, a non-UK unit will mount the King’s Life Guard. From July 11–21, Canada’s own Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), will stand guard in London, coincidentally marking 125 years of service. #LdSHRC #KingsLifeGuard
Eva Marie Saint is 101 years old today. North By Northwest (1959) Eva is the oldest living Oscar winner, and one of the last living stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. This scene with Cary Grant is still one of the hottest scenes ever filmed. This is how you do it, kids.
One of the most remarkable things about the UK is you can be walking around a quiet country churchyard and look down amidst the overgrowing grass to see the grave of a VC hidden away.

I read a Miss Marple novel and I hear John Hickson's voice.
I finally got round to starting to watch Joan Hickson's Miss Marple series from the 80s, and I enjoyed it tremendously. Couldn't get out of my head @OldRoberts953's observation that the theme tune is basically the Blackadder theme tune tho

And they could get Martin Short to do his Pierre Trudeau at the end in place of Janet Brown doing her Margaret Thatcher.
We need a Denis Villeneuve remake of For Your Eyes Only that doesn't erase the CanCon of the original Fleming book and features Bond eliminating Cubans and an ex-Nazi on the Quebec border
"What is civilisation? I don't know. I can't define it in abstract terms – yet. But I think I can recognise it when I see it."
We all know what the American Dream is but what's the British Dream?
Test Cricket. The Rolls Royce of all our great game. Please stop serving me up the slop of the Mickey Mouse format
Very much enjoyed visiting @DorchesterAbbey today but equally enjoyable was the fantastic tea room. Wonderful cake, an excellent cuppa and staffed by warm and engaging volunteers. You couldn't ask for more in a tea room.

So if it's the government's responsibility to "support those who defend us" who will resign over this? Prediction? Crickets...
The act of vandalism committed at RAF Brize Norton is disgraceful. Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain and put their lives on the line for us every day. It is our responsibility to support those who defend us.
Summer after Eighth Grade. I can still remember picking up "The Day of the Jackal" from the Oak Bay Library. I could not put it down. I've read it multiple times since. In my mind, it remains the perfect thriller. Frederick Forsyth RIP. telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/202…
