Prayers for the fallen, on Omaha Beach. By the great Robert Capa.

Gravediggers. Robert Capa's incredible photo of POWs burying Americans killed on Omaha Beach in the first American graveyard, just off the beach.

Great Americans today.
Righteous warriors. Men of the 16th Infantry Regiment who received the DSC for actions on D Day. Ike thanks them for their service and sacrifice.
It's dark now in Normandy. D Day draws to a close. The Allies are ashore, but the beachhead is fragile and will soon come under vicious, sustained attack. Here's a quick run over the numbers on this historic day. Thanks for following my coverage these last 24 hours.

So many intense memories today, of warriors and widows, all now gone. I think of the words inscribed on the wall of the chapel in the graveyard above Omaha Beach: “Think not only upon their passing. Remember the glory of their spirit.”
The free world erupts in joy at the news that the Allies have landed in Normandy. In Amsterdam, Anne Frank notes in her diary that the best thing about the invasion is the feeling that "friends are on their way." Millions of Europeans dare to hope for freedom, at long last.
