My labβs 5-year NIH R01 grant, awarded to study gene therapy for hearing loss, was abruptly terminated. I want to share how this action has been incredibly harmful and disruptive, not just to my lab, but to the scientific process itself. 1/15
PhD program applicants: if your PhD program is not direct admit into a specific lab, I recommend at least waiting until the interview phase to contact PIs. I also do not recommend applying to programs if there are only 1-2 labs you may want to join. There should be several.
I am happy to share that Iβve been awarded tenure here at Columbia University. Alhamdulillah. I thank my wife, parents, mentors, colleagues, friends, & family. I thank my lab members, present and past, for entrusting their careers in my hands and making this a thrilling journey.
A late shout out to my first graduate student, Ricky, for crushing his qualifying exam. Such a big milestone, and super excited to see all you accomplish. Wins can feel like theyβre hard to come by these days, so celebrating all of them!! Congrats to the new PhD candidate!!ππ₯³

Wondering if your grant will be reinstated from Monday's ruling? Check here. Plaintiffs have uploaded a list of 848 (of the ~2400 total terminated) they say are covered because they're to institutions in the states aforementioned or a part of APHA/UAW. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscoβ¦

and may I add that this is not a mere "delay" as many institutions are TERMINATING these otherwise active grants if the NoA is delayed by more than 30 days because they cannot afford to keep grant supported research personnel on payroll
Jay, can you explain why practically zero $$ was given out by the NIH in May? Including already awarded grants!

An epidemiologist at Columbia had to issue a statement saying the research article RFK Jr. cited with her name is FAKE. The paper itself doesnβt EXIST. Yall this is fascism. FAKE scientific articles used by the government to influence policy is FASCISM. This is horrifying.

Last year, we were ecstatic to receive a R01 grant to continue this work. We scored in the top 2% of a nationwide call for new genomic technologies That grant was a part of the >$2 billion in federal funding to Harvard recently cancelled under political pretenses
The peer-reviewed version of expansion in situ genome sequencing is now out in Science! The news is bittersweet β when we first revealed this last September, I never guessed it would be my final paper in academia, but a lot has changed. A few parting thoughts:
