A much too flattering profile of yours truly. A testament to Vivien’s writing skills to actually make it sounds like I (1) am interesting and (2) know what i’m doing 🤣

My lab’s 5-year NIH R01 grant, awarded to study gene therapy for hearing loss, was abruptly terminated. I want to share how this action has been incredibly harmful and disruptive, not just to my lab, but to the scientific process itself. 1/15
I love this question and the many thoughtful replies. Should be a Perspective-type review article!! 👀👀
I’d love to hear biologists weigh in on the fundamental question: can you predict the impact of cell perturbations better by studying the natural variation in a population of healthy cells (more data), or by studying cells that have been perturbed genetically or chemically?

Anyone know what’s going on with NIH NRSAs? My student just scored a 9% (impact score 22) for her F31..assigned to NIMH!! 🥳 Normally this would be a slam dunk..but who knows these days 🫠
Why do video models handle motion so poorly? It might be lack of motion equivariance. Very excited to introduce: Flow Equivariant RNNs (FERNNs), the first sequence models to respect symmetries over time. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2507.14793 Blog: kempnerinstitute.harvard.edu/research/deepe… 1/🧵
Since WWII, America has led the world -- economically and in so many other ways -- in no small part because of its willingness to spend on basic research and its ability to attract the world's best and brightest. That is changing -- fast. My deep dive on the topic:

We're all excited to see our advanced Gemini Deep Think model achieve a gold-medal level performance in the recent IMO, solving 5 of the 6 problems perfectly (35 of 42 points)! 🥇 Unlike our entry last year, which first converted the problems to a formal proof language (Lean),…
Very excited to share that an advanced version of Gemini Deep Think is the first to have achieved gold-medal level in the International Mathematical Olympiad! 🏆, solving five out of six problems perfectly, as verified by the IMO organizers! It’s been a wild run to lead this…
💯. Just a specific aims page, perhaps?
🫠😡! If this is going to be the norm, they need to add a LOI stage to limit number of applications by 80%! Such a waste of time to submit full applications if chance of success is <2-3%.
Great @hubermanlab podcast on kratom. Lots of balanced info here. I'll say I'm skeptical that the "stimulant at low doses" claim is anything special about kratom. As a behavioral pharmacologist I've studied many drugs in humans. Virtually any "sedative" has reported stimulant…
