Better Blocks New Jersey
@BetterBlocksNJ
Better Blocks NJ advocates for better urban land use so New Jerseyans can build more housing, businesses, parks, and transit to sustain our vibrant communities.
We're from Jersey, baby, and you can be too!
.@3_under_scores_ and I are launching @betterblocksnj — a new political advocacy group focused on working with elected leaders and candidates starting in Jersey City to: 🏘️ Build more housing 🚆 Improve mass transit 🚸 Make our streets safer 🌳 Protect our public parks 1/
politicians and anti development people should stand outside Hoboken Cube Smart and explain to many individuals who sleep in those units why mire housing“ development” is bad and needs “ further studies” This is not Hudson Valley or the Bay area of CA
A common refrain in the discourse around housing, development, and street safety is the question, "Where will they park?" Jersey City is a leader in eliminating parking minimums from new development and has one of the nation's highest rates of car-free households as a result.

MLK/Ocean are dangerous for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers alike. We need more than prayers after 6 year-olds die in the crosswalk. We must take meaningful action to make our roads safer. Remember this when you vote in November: McGreevey cares more about cars than your kids.
Ocean Avenue and MLK should remain two-way streets. Having worked at 398 MLK for years and having family and friends from the neighborhood, converting these streets to one-way would create serious challenges for our seniors and schoolchildren. Many older residents rely on nearby…
Join the planning meeting tonight and tell them you want more retail, more affordable housing, and fewer cars on Bergen Ave.

Oh, quick call to action! E-mail your council members and cc their aides. Tell them you support making public transit more reliable and our streets safer for everyone.
Jersey City plans to turn MLK/Ocean and Summit/Baldwin into paired one-way streets to add bus lanes to speed up transit, bike lanes to protect bikers and pedestrians, and preserve all existing on-street parking. This plan should have unanimous council support.
.@PATHTrain: A modest proposal. Run more JSQ-WTC service on weekends.
Avoid PATH 33rd st line suspended and this is Journal Sq
👏 No parking and retail opportunity means a safer and more walkable street for all.
The planning board is hearing a proposed change that will double the amount of affordable housing and add ground-floor retail to a proposed building on Bergen Ave. If you are able to, come out to support this proposal that will add more homes and businesses on July 15.

.@EducationalGil1: when cars killed kids on Dutch roads, angry parents forced politicians to prioritize road safety, demanding they #StopTheChildMurder Today, the Dutch have a fraction of the road deaths and world-class cycling and transit infrastructure.
We know our roads are still dangerous. Parents have screamed about aggressive driving, lack of enforcement, and incomplete safety infrastructure for years. This is our "Stop de Kindermood" moment. betterblocksnj.org
Councilman Gilmore's flyers about the MLK/Ocean bus/bike lanes is sowing fear, uncertainty, and doubt on Nextdoor and Instagram. The flyers & poll mention the costs to drivers ("turn MLK & Ocean into ONE-WAY Streets") but say absolutely nothing about the benefits to bus riders.
Street safety advocates have been calling for this funding boost for the Department of Infrastructure for a while. It's long overdue. Please email the council to support this proposal!

Getting the Council to approve the 5 new miles of MOBS (MLK/Ocean/Baldwin/Summit) protected bike lanes will be a huge battle. People need to be ready to exert pressure on the councilmembers, show up, and speak out.
We’re about to repave Palisade Ave entirely and as part of the project, near Dickinson HS, we’re adding a protected bike lane w/zero loss of parking. This will make the area much safer for students + more North//South opportunities. Our administration has delivered 24 miles of…
If anyone wants to work with us to canvass at bus stops on Ocean and MLK so that those bus riders' voices can be heard on this, let us know! It'll drastically speed up their buses, but I'm worried many of them won't even know about this survey.
Let @EducationalGil1 and all our council members know that #ENOUGHisENOUGH. We demand action on street safety and fully support the administration's plan to create more one-way streets and invest in road infrastructure improvements.

.@EducationalGil1 put out a survey to gauge community support for making MLK and Ocean one-way as part of the city's plan to 1) make our streets safer and 2) create more space to faster bus and bike travel without 3) taking away street parking. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

The easiest way for the next mayor to fix Jersey City’s finances is to make it easier to build mid- and high-rise housing that pays hundreds of thousands to millions more in property taxes versus the parking lots and tear downs that pay a fraction of that.
I read Councilman Solomon’s statement on the city’s downgraded credit rating, and I agree with his concerns. But the truth is, this issue requires more than just statements. It requires action.
