Pediatric ID physician-scientist studying the mysterious inner workings of host immunity. Tweets = my own and do not reflect my employer's nor my lab's views.
Our lab's first paper is out in the journal Autophagy @tandfonline! We found surprising differences in two common murine models of #cytokinestorm syndrome/ shock induced by #LPS and #TNF. bit.ly/3AUglxE. A 🧵: 1/n
Excited to share our paper identifying that bat coronavirus HKU5 uses ACE2 from its native bat host and American mink as a receptor. This highlights farmed mink has a high risk intermediate host for HKU5-like viruses. nature.com/articles/s4146… @YaleIBIO @YaleMed
🎉 Congrats to Michael D. Thompson of @WashU, 2025 Pilot Research Award in Liver Diseases awardee! His research explores how maternal diet may influence the risk of #biliaryatresia in offspring. #AASLD #LiverResearch #PediatricLiverDisease
Excited to share the finished version of this big project reporting a new mechanism of action for the E. coli alpha-hemolysin! pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
youtu.be/mqn0is7alPI?si… RFK Jr. does not believe in the germ theory of infections.
Excited to share our new preprint, in which senior grad student Hunter Kuhn led our discovery of a novel mechanism by which E. coli hemolysin (HlyA) kills epithelial cells! (Spoiler: not by forming pores in the plasma membrane!) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Last week's @CytokineSociety #cytokines2024 meeting in Seoul was amazing! To celebrate, @SciImmunology has just released a free sample collection of papers highlighting the immunology of #cytokines! Articles are free online to read for the next 6 weeks! bit.ly/SciImm_free
Saddened by the news of Dr. Griffin’s passing. As a mentee of one of her mentees (Dr. Beth Levine), my own training and approach to scientific inquiry was profoundly influenced by her discoveries and approach to discovery.
Mourning the loss of Dr. Diane Griffin, who passed away on Monday. Dr. Griffin was a founding member of @CMM_JHU and chaired our advisory board. A distinguished virologist, she was an elected member of Natl Acad Sci and Natl Acad Med. We remember her with gratitude.
Feeling the loss of Diane E. Griffin - brilliant physician-scientist who changed our thinking about host responses to viruses. Her calm leadership moved mountains seemingly effortlessly at home and around the world, all with poise, civility, humility and much joy.
Our preprint uncovering how endogenous retrovirus-like proteins reshape fundamental stress granule features is now online! So many awesome discoveries, the coolest being virus-like particles within stress granules! Cryo-CLEM work was led by Martin from @s_mosalaganti lab 1/8
The program for this meeting is exciting! #mitochondria #obesity #diabetes #mitochondrialdiseases #mitophagy #mitodynamics #mitotransfer #mitotransplants #mitomics and more Join us in St Louis next Juneby the Arch! #MitoMed 2025 @UMDF

“I like infectious disease” ⬇️ “Oh shit student loans” ⬇️ “I like cardiology” ⬇️ Super bacteria destroys human race. Everybody dies with clean coronary arteries.
Today is Match Day for internal medicine and pediatric subspecialties. Here’s how things shook out for programs.

Incredibly proud of my former @UTSWGradSchool student Christina Zarek and her paper in @PLOSPathogens!!! There is still so much to learn about the biology of #coinfection with #herpesvirus and #parasites!
Helminth infections exacerbate chronic herpesvirus infection. Importantly, the mechanism by which this occurs is dependent on the order of coinfection. Learn more in this recent study 🔎 plos.io/40kcUMX
