This is how we started implementing the similarity metric (GATOR Focal Scores) and how it actually turned out
GATOR-GC is out at @NAR_Open !!Check out our new targeted genome mining tool featuring a novel similarity metric to efficiently compare and deduplicate gene clusters. We uncover biosynthetic diversity missed by other genome mining tools academic.oup.com/nar/article/53…

Great to be able to promote the #ISBA2025 Special Collection we are putting together with @MicrobioSoc - contact me if you wish to submit and thanks also to @MicrobioSoc for sponsoring the ECR-mentors lunch
Day 3 of #ISBA2025 was packed with more great talks and students had the chance to connect with the mentors in the organized lunch session! We finished the day with the second poster session - the best posters will be awarded on the last day of the Symposium, so stay tuned!
Thursday! Episode 92 of #MattersMicrobial! Dr. Valerie DeAnda Torres of the Univ of Florida joined the #QualityQuorum to discuss studying evolution of metabolic pathways in the deep ocean. Please spread the #GoodMicrobialWord! youtu.be/nNcXGmh9CZo?si…
If you are a PhD student in microbial interactions or natural products that is displaced by this political bullshit and looking for a new lab, I have room for one (or potentially two) PhD students in my group in the fall when I move to UW. Feel free to reach out via email.

Harvard University is suing the Trump administration to halt the federal ban on the school enrolling international students cnn.it/4kbNyKu
I came to the US as an international student and it changed my entire life — opened so many doors. Harvard ban will impact many US schools as international students will be uncertain about enrolling. Other countries will benefit the most as students now need safer options.
It is so exciting to be getting started here at the UofT!

Please share this letter from the Coalition for the Life Sciences re termination of ongoing NIH grants. It's a breach of trust betw researchers and govt, bad for trainees, potentially fatal for patients in clinical trials, and diminishes US science. coalitionforlifesciences.org/cls-calls-on-t…
🔬 At @ucsandiego, scientists like Brad Moore–Distinguished Professor at Scripps Oceanography and @ucsdpharmacy–are leading the charge to source and develop compounds from nature that are being used to develop the next generation of medicines. 🧵⬇️
Thrilled to share our latest enzyme engineering in ACS Chemical Biology! We improved an enzyme involved in #polyketide starter unit biosynthesis and used it to generate polyketide acceptor substrates in vitro. Kudos to Jared and the team of authors! @ACSPublications
