Microbial evangelist and podcaster. Husband, father, moderate. Assoc. Professor facing retirement in June of 2026. Looking for what sparks microbial joy next.
I love quotations. Maybe someday I will have a quote of my own. Until then, this is what I believe. @ASMicrobiology @univpugetsound

Hey, Seth! #DocMartian Hannah is looking at some of my isopods for Wolbachia, following the Discover the Microbes Within guidelines. She didn't like homogenizing the little isopods. @Symbionticism

I stabbed a tiny bit of Bacillus mycoides into the center of the R2A plate. Look at what happened over a few days! Microbes have such stories to tell, if we are listening and thinking.

I like seeing what passerby write on the whiteboard outside of my lab,The first two answers are from my #DocMartian research students. The last two are from-who knows? One shows knowledge about cheese. The other ones may have heard of Rob Dunn's "Belly Button Microbiome" project.

This is from many years ago, when I was nervous about a plenary talk. It shows the differences between my two sons. I adore them both.

New week, new episode of #MattersMicrobial! Dr. Nicole Geerlings of the University of Vienna joins the #QualityQuorum to discuss the amazing and electrical cable bacteria! It was SO MUCH FUN. Please spread the #GoodMicrobialWord! @profvrr youtu.be/q7-O4KydYFo?si…

Then was time for me to be "TWiM Adjacent" and guest on This Week in Microbiology. It was a great discussion of two articles regarding plasmid size and copy number. There were some funny jokes I laughed at, as you can see. @profvrr

Recording episode 102 of #MattersMicrobial with Davida Smyth, who seems to share a similar mindset to yours truly. It was a great session about education, teaching, and microbial centrism. It will release next week. @davidasmyth1

Thursdays are busy days. Two podcasts, emails, organization, writing proposals. Wish me luck.

Submitted!!! 🥳🥳🥳 My first CAREER proposal was submitted to @NSF! I hope the #reviewers and #NSF staff will positively evaluate our research proposal on methane-producing archaea under stress.
Archaea are sad, pili raised at the back of the room and microbially muttering.

I loved these stamps. I used them on student assignments. Original artwork commissioned from Ethan Kocak and Peggy Muddles. @Blackmudpuppy @vexedmuddler

I love astronomy and microbiology. My eyes are awful so eyepieces don’t work well for me (oh to have a good screen). But this bit of William Blake inspires me inward and outward. What lives in this microscopic tangle of filaments? #Wonder

Though I read Marcus Aurelius’ “Meditations” as a boy, it took me until my late 30s to really study Stoicism. It made me a better person (oh, the embarrassing memories!). I still have a long way to go, but this is the essence.

Yeah, I have heard this plenty of times. Even recently. But I *still* did okay, helped a lot of people, love my family, adore microbiology, and do my best. And I’m not done moving forward. H8rs gotta H8; don’t let them dict8!

Remembering the time I could see the aurora from my front porch in Tacoma.

When I was in graduate school, working alone late at night (there is a story there), here are the four albums I favored. I knew every word to every song.

Okay, here is the assignment: POV camera swoops in, through your eye, into your brain. There is a giant disco ball rotating. What is your theme song? The one song that defines your personality? For me, "Head Like A Hole" by Nine Inch Nails. You?
