Anaesthetics, ITU, Manchester City and F1 mad.
💉 “Give a fluid challenge — see if we can get the norad down.” We’ve all heard it. Boluses are often given just to reduce vasopressor doses. Why? • Fear that pressors are harmful • Pressure to keep patients off ICU But topping up to drop the norad might not be the best move…
I am standing for the BMA Professional Regulation Committee member at #BMAARM. With major GMC reforms ahead it's crucial doctors' voices are central to shaping regulation. Proud to have led the recent GMC judicial review for safer standards with @AnaesUnited.
We should talk about the the inevitable q of how this mess happened. Prof Leng stated her review wouldn’t dwell on it. This is within her gift - the review is hard enough to land despite sticking to its precise question. But the question of how this happened cannot be ignored 1/
Remember, the new Medical Act and AAPA Order is being drafted in secret between the DHSC and the GMC as we speak. Other than PA title changes, this presents a once in a generation moment to reform the GMC to meet the needs of the profession and wider public.
The GMC are in bed with the DHSC, busy smashing out a new edition of "The GMC Order", which seeks to replace the Medical Act and the AAPA Order. That may be our chance to reform the GMC to a regulator fit for purpose in a modern world.
"We do not accept the recommendations of the Leng Review" says PA Group. And that is why AU are fighting for the GMC to enforce a defined scope of practice. Please help us achieve our target crowdjustice.com/case/stop-misl…
My 6 year old throws more constructive tantrums than this Every time @UMAPsUK issues a press release it makes the ongoing employability & feasibility of assistants more problematic It really is time PA’s found a constructive spokesperson to work with the medical profession
1/n I want to say something about PAs. I don’t know yet if this will be long or short cause I am not psychic. What I do know is this: the situation has become a mess. Not just administratively. Not just professionally. But emotionally. And it’s going to leave scars.
One of the most significant shifts in the #LengReview is the dismantling of #GMP2024, to create two sets of standards 'for clarity'. The term “medical professionals” to describe PA/AAs looks set to be scrapped. A good move by @TheBMA to appeal.
#GoodMedicalPractice2024 is not about role, title or scope of practice, it sets out the ‘principles, values, and standards of care and professional behaviours expected of all medical professionals [doctors now and later PAs and AAs] registered with us’. [=@gmcuk]
Great to see Prof Leng endorse the RCoA Scope. But endorsement alone isn’t enough. For too long, trusts have ignored guidance like this. Unless the GMC enforces this Scope, it risks being sidelined again. Remember AAs were boasting about "bending the rules" or finding grey areas.
We’ve published our initial response to the Leng Review. We're pleased the review has endorsed the Interim AA Scope of Practice and we support the recommendation to rename the AA role. We will respond in full once Council has discussed the report 👉rcoa.ac.uk/news/initial-r…
Looks like @medicalmodelbri does a better job at protecting the public than the 1700 employees at @gmcuk.
A physiotherapist was suspended for 18 months by the @The_HCPC for reasons unknown . This physio is also a physician Associate. He is STILL listed on the @gmcuk register @The_HCPC have you informed the @gmcuk about the conduct of this person or does the public have to ?
Prof @parthaskar will be suspended by the RCP after raising concerns in an open and transparent manner. This sets a dangerous precedent. Inaction is complicity. RCP members must speak up. ✍️ Sign the letter 👇👇👇
I’m not usually one for petitions but when someone is ousted from the RCP for raising safety concerns, silence isn’t an option. @parthakar’s removal is shocking. Council must refuse to ratify it next week or risk complicity in the governance failings laid bare in the Kings Fund…

We’re incredibly grateful for your support over the past year. It's your donations that brought this case to the forefront. We’re nearly there. Please help us get this over the line 🙏
We fought for safety. But we still need to pay the lawyers who fought for us. We are about £15,000 short. The reasons are at anaesthetistsunited.com/we-fought-for-…
This meeting minutes was not disclosed in @AnaesUnited claim. @drcolinm in his three witness statements exhibited screenshots from Reddit, but didn't disclose the minutes below. Any reason for that Professor? Were you present at this meeting?
The @gmcuk said in court they decided not to set scope but it was never a single decision This would suggest the Colleges were expecting & prepared to set limits implying the GMC actively fought against it Does this explain their failed disclosure & have they lied to the court?
Please do consider voting for @DrEilidhMaria and @cannula_service for the RDC at #BMAARM2025. Power advocates for residents with a proven track record.
I’m up for election for RDC and also ARM agenda committee and would appreciate a vote (1st preference would enormously help). Please consider voting for me and distribute amongst your BoPs.
I’m standing for the BMA Professional Regulation Committee at #BMA ARM. With the DAUK, I worked with the BMA and individuals to defend doctors and drive systemic change – from issues like MAPs and MPTS reform to fairness in hearings. If you want a proven advocate for doctors…
Exactly. With the GMC now seeking to 'reform' the Medical Act, this is our chance to push for meaningful change. We need a modern regulator that is fit for purpose, transparent, and genuinely accountable to the profession it serves.
So if we’re going to pass new legislation to amend the PA/AA order on titles anyway; There’s absolutely no reason not to take this legislative procedural opportunity to change the regulator too. The GMC was always the wrong regulator. The HCPC is best placed to handle it.
To watch the hearing online on the 9th June, you must email your request beforehand. It's a quick and straightforward process. anaesthetistsunited.com/details-of-the…
anaesthetistsunited.com/details-of-the… The final day of the hearing is on June 9th. Please note the arrangements for streaming have changed - take note.
The @RCoANews is consulting on updates to the draft AA curriculum to align it with the interim Scope of Practice and HEI teaching. We support the changes and urge College members to complete the survey - check your inbox! Deadline: 23 May 2025
Right, so seatbelts also don’t eliminate risk so let’s scrap them, is that your logic @gmcuk Safety checks on aeroplanes? Shall we go the whole hog and just get rid of training and qualifications because they don’t eliminate risk completely?
He says that while setting hard limits on the scope of PA/AA roles might reduce risks, such an approach would not eliminate risk completely.
