some of the best science is done through impassioned emails and forum posts. appreciate the candidness by @minjunesh
Short Sleep Variants Do Not Replicate In March Kristjan Moore from deCODE genetics emailed me urging me to stop working on short sleep. I read paper in question since Jan, but was still hoping/coping that maybe NPSR1 variant (not included in the paper) would replicate.

If you agree with this take, then generating data in humans and getting regulatory approval become the rate-limiting steps
Dario Amodei said on Dwarkesh that, if capabilities continue to advance, we are on the cusp of a sudden tipping point for LLM biological breakthroughs. In Davos, Sir Demis said he expects to have Al-designed drugs in clinical trials by the end of this year. It's almost here.
Back then we had a prof in a freshman course ask us to estimate the amount of trace phosphorus to expect in their buffers. There was potentially enough there for the bugs to survive without incorporating arsenic. Good lesson in sanity checks.

Congrats @AdamMarblestone - federal policy is catching up! The FRO model is well suited to a world of AI-accelerated science.

Great review giving the nuts and bolts of wearable ultrasound devices. Appreciate the physical intuitions w/ numbers to back and grounded view of a ton of clinical apps. Congrats @XugroupUCSD and team!
This article in @natrevbioeng offers a comprehensive overview of recent advances in wearable ultrasound technology across academia and industry. We did our best to cover the full landscape and are deeply grateful to the researchers whose work we reviewed. In the final section, we…

Biotech is not considered cool.
Yeah...the Rick Rubin posting is telling. The antidote to specialist FOMO is knowing that mastering one thing requires understanding many things. Anyway, here is the Angeles Forest at sunset yesterday.
I worry the pendulum has swung too far towards generalists over specialists, sacrificing wisdom for speed. Resulting in either boring consensus or unserious hype. There is such a thing as deep technical craft, but I’m not sure you can understand if you’ve never done it yourself
Engineer mindset W "It is the optimization of the whole system (drug, drug formulation and device) that is necessary for the successful development of inhalation therapies, both new and old..."
Honestly, I don't think any VC predicted so many $Billions of equity value creation from nebulizers. $VRNA $INSM Feels to be a VC should be investing in hand-held battery powered nebulizers... pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC18…
Very excited to see these tools come online! Hormones likely have a lot of interesting subcellular dynamics just waiting to be uncovered. cpGFP is just the gift that keeps on giving.
(1/3) Excited to introduce our new GRAB sensors for a series of steroid hormones! These tools enable real-time detection of steroid hormone dynamics in vivo🐭🧠.Happy to share these sensors and welcome any feedback! Please contact [email protected] for information.
Definitely underrated. Acknowledgments for the people map; chapter 1 for the concept map.
the more i read phd dissertations, the more i'm convinced they're often the best way to grok a given subject. maybe bc the author is a student and just went through the exp of learning the stuff fresh in their mind? derivations easy to follow, explanations intuitive, etc

OK. I posted a first attempt at spelling out some of my thoughts on the new race for virtual cell models. Overall, I'm excited, but also wary that we might repeat some of the same mistakes of the past.
Great updated view of the ANS: from "broad discharge" to diverse organ & function-specific pathways identified. Example of the BRAIN initiative paying dividends. Interesting transcript database curated by the authors. Congrats @ttwang0908!
Thrilled to share that my first REVIEW is online @NatRevNeurosci today! We highlighted the molecular and functional diversity of brain-to-body autonomic pathways 📖 Hope you enjoy reading it and find the resources helpful 🤗👇 rdcu.be/euEhn nature.com/articles/s4158…
Freshly waxed court. Dog days of summer. Love this time of year.

Soham said it’s not copilot that really helped him do this…it was being a “serial non-sleeper.” Bullish for biotech.
We asked @realsohamparekh if he had been working multiple full-time jobs at once. "It is true." “I’m not proud of what I’ve done. That’s not something I endorse either. But no one really likes to work 140 hours a week, I had to do it out of necessity." "I was in extremely dire…
