Sharing a new piece of research out today in China Leadership Monitor, on the role of China's Ministry of State Security under Xi Jinping: prcleader.org/post/counter-e…
It's now evident that the outcomes predicted in my Foreign Affairs article about the strategic consequences of bombing Iran have materialized. The act of bombing has not only bolstered support for the Iranian regime but also proved ineffective in eradicating Iran's enriched…
It'd be a pretty catastrophic outcome *IF* the attacks on Fordow failed to destroy centrifuges and they can be put back into service. I'm not claiming this is the case, but U.S. officials seem to be hinting it's a possibility. (1/n)
New: A senior defense official tells reporters they don't know whether the "bunker buster" bombs penetrated to the full depth of the Fordow nuclear site "Thats a level of info we don't have access to at this point in time."
Joseph Nye, a Harvard professor whose ideas on the nature of power in international relations influenced generations of policymakers, academics, & students and made him one of the world’s most celebrated political thinkers, has died at the age of 88 ken.sc/3RQSGav
Very pleased to have a research note in the upcoming issue of @ISQ_Jrnl. The article explores a classic issue--nonproliferation & US alliances--using a new data source: a survey of elites (foreign & defense policy experts and policymakers) in European NATO countries.
The US is trying to reindustrialize with tariffs, especially on China. But China has lessons to teach the US about industrial strategy. Our new @RANDCorporation Commentary on applying six lessons from China's experience to the current moment in US economic policy... 🧵 1/

Donald Trump knows how to say “you’re fired." Time to say it to Pete Hegseth.
The hallmark of an effective repressive system is not that everybody is being repressed, but that a few people are targeted and everybody else learns to keep their mouth shut. Meet repression with solidarity and mobilization, not self-censorship. More: tinyurl.com/37fdanve
VP Vance asked for a thank you for an aid package he voted against. His administration also told Zelensky that he (1) has to give up parts of his country to Putin , (2) cant join NATO, (3) has to pay back the US for past aid, and (4) there will no new aid. So exactly why does…
“Have you said thank you once?” –@VP JD Vance
We spent the last three years criticizing China for throwing Ukraine under the bus. Now Beijing is more sympathetic to Kyiv than the Trump Administration is.
The American 'reverse Nixon' is totally working! "During their meeting, Shoigu told Xi that the relations between the two sides were at 'an unprecedentedly high level,' adding that Russia valued the agreements it had reached with China and aimed to deepen them."
Chinese president Xi tells Russian security advisor Shoigu that the two countries are “true friends like steel repeatedly tempered by fire.” @SCMPNews bit.ly/3EUd4UI
So now that passions have died down somewhat (including my own), let's try to understand what happened. The disastrous Trump/Zelensky press conference reflected a real divergence of interests, but also a culture clash and a personality clash.
The US position on Ukraine is now closer to Russia's than the Chinese position. Beijing abstained on the UN resolution condemning the war; Washington voted against it. So the China-Russia "no limits" partnership has limits. What are the limits of Trump's support for Putin?
1/ There is discussion in Washington over Trump's approach to Asia. One school of thought is that Trump's approach has been broadly continuous with Biden admin. Trump hosted Japanese and Indian leaders, Secretary Rubio has engaged intensively with Asian counterparts, etc. (🧵)
The US now appears to regard it as legitimate to openly try and influence, and indeed hijack, the democratic process in other countries. All democracies need to be on high alert. The idea that the greatest threat of foreign interference comes from the likes of China appears now…
Vox will win the next election
In the first month of his second term, President Donald Trump has reshaped the government with a flurry of executive orders. A recent analysis by Politico found that many of those actions have closely aligned with Project 2025, a conservative policy blueprint he once disavowed.…
