It was a real pleasure to contribute to this @BrookingsChina Q&A on the role of alliances in US-China competition! brookings.edu/articles/are-a…
Are America’s alliances a source of strength or a burden as it competes with China? The Global China project convened experts @solis_msolis, @thomaswright08, @Doug_Bandow, & @BrianDBlank, to answer. They agree that alliances matter - but disagree on how: brook.gs/3ZibuTS
@BrianDBlank tests whether U.S. signals of abandonment and efforts to encourage allied burden-sharing using threats of abandonment increase support for nuclear weapons acquisition, using a survey of foreign policy elites from 16 European NATO members. tinyurl.com/sqaf039
We have a title! Cover coming soon...and the book comes out in October via @CornellPress.
I am elated to say that my book, "Words of War: Negotiation as a Tool of Conflict," is now published and available to order! In the book, I argue and demonstrate that negotiations are not only used to end wars but can also be wielded to fight them. A summary thread is below.
I have a new piece published by @defpriorities that evaluates the effectiveness of different strategies for soliciting alliance burden-sharing. Check it out! defensepriorities.org/content/achiev…
I just received an advance copy of my book, Words of War! I am thrilled to hold it. The nice cover is a bonus. The book argues that negotiations are not only used to end wars but also to fight them. Words of War comes out on February 15, 2025. More info: cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/978150177…

We worry a lot about the credibility of threats. We should worry more about the credibility of coercive assurance. Targets of coercion defy credible threats when they think they are ‘damned if they do and damned if they don’t’. doi.org/10.1162/isec_a…
Thrilled to review @BrianDBlank's fantastic book for @PSQuarterly. I suppose you can read it, but just go read the actual book if you can. It's awesome. academic.oup.com/psq/advance-ar…
Another banger of a podcast from @jwcglaser. This time with @RenanahJoyce and @BrianDBlank on the competitive dynamics of overseas military basing. Kudos to them on a great article!

My book has a webpage! Coming in early 2025 with @CornellPress: cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/978150177…
Really enjoyed talking with @jwcglaser on the Power Problems podcast about my recent @SecStudies_Jrnl article with @BrianDBlank. We talk about how great power competition increases the costs of overseas military bases (and what purpose those bases serve in the first place)
