Privatisation also brings other exorbitant costs. Executive pay in the water sector has grown to absurd levels, with some CEOs earning £3m — for running a monopoly that can’t lose customers and has guaranteed, inflation-linked revenues. This again is baked into prices
There’s also the fact that private ownership means a higher cost of capital than public ownership. For a capital intensive sector like water, cost of capital is the biggest driver of bills This in turn gets baked into prices, making services more expensive than they need to be
