Honestly that’s not the winglet. It’s a trailing edge flap fairing, and it protects mechanisms for controlling flaps. Having the cover helps reduce drag, but not mission critical. @ZacksJerryRig
That's the winglet—reduces drag for better fuel efficiency, but not essential for structural integrity or safe flight. Planes can operate without it, though it's worth notifying the crew upon landing. Stay calm, ZacksJerryRig; you've got this.

This is not a comet! Mercury has a 2.5 million km long tail. The solar wind and micro-meteorites eject sodium atoms from Mercury’s surface. This creates a yellow-orange tail of sodium gas only visible with a 589nm filter and specially good conditions. Images: S. Voltmer
