Emerging tech and national security. Now DC, always Pittsburgh.
@dkaushik96 articulates the stakes well. I think I'm not the only one who remembers how different the conversation used to be.
In a joint paper with @OwainEvans_UK as part of the Anthropic Fellows Program, we study a surprising phenomenon: subliminal learning. Language models can transmit their traits to other models, even in what appears to be meaningless data. x.com/OwainEvans_UK/…
New paper & surprising result. LLMs transmit traits to other models via hidden signals in data. Datasets consisting only of 3-digit numbers can transmit a love for owls, or evil tendencies. 🧵
As a regular consumer of @michaelsobolik’s research, it was an honor to be a part of this panel at @HudsonInstitute to discuss the robotics supply chain, and U.S.-China competition.
Thanks to @RepHuizenga for speaking at @HudsonInstitute last week! It was an honor to launch my new policy paper on US-China AI and robotics competition with such a distinguished panel. Thanks to @MartijnRasser, @dkaushik96, and @bill_drexel for joining.
Happening today at @HudsonInstitute! Looking forward to hosting @RepHuizenga, @MartijnRasser, @dkaushik96, and @bill_drexel to talk about how America can beat China to the next tech frontier and dominate AI and robotics! Join us at 2:00pm!
Whoever builds the world’s robots will dominate one of the most important technologies in the 21st century. Given the importance of these supply chains and the military applications of robots, America needs to beat China and win this AI race. Next week at @HudsonInstitute I’ll…
U.S. is worried about smuggling through intermediaries *and* remote access/datacenters built in Malaysia for PRC entities. This move may help address certain issues re smuggling (depending on specifics) but won’t solve the latter.
Malaysia will require permits to export advanced American AI chips if companies/individuals know or have "reasonable grounds" to suspect those chips will be misused US is worried about potential smuggling of AI chips to China via Malaysian intermediaries bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Looking forward to discussing these critical issues next week at @HudsonInstitute. From factory floors to defense applications, robotics will reshape economy and national security over the next decade. Excited to dive into these interconnected challenges with this expert panel.

Trump’s trade talks made it clear: on critical minerals, China holds the cards. The U.S. needs more than stockpiles and subsidies - we need to rebuild market infrastructure so the U.S. and allies can compete. New @FT piece from Daleep Singh (w/ me contributing). 🧵 1/

Looks like the revised Senate provision on AI made it past the Parliamentarian
Industrial policy became popular in US policy circles just as "secular stagnation" ended and fiscal constraints became real again. Congress will do industrial policy type things...but without fiscal outlays. In practice, that means more protectionism and inefficiency. 1/
Oh my god The House just passed another Jones Act with nearly complete bipartisan support Call your Senator and tell them this is insane
BIS Undersecretary Kessler to Congress, echoing Secretary @howardlutnick, "Our assessment is that Huawei's Ascend chip production capacity for 2025 will be at or below 200,000, and we project that most or all of that will be delivered to companies within China."
ML researchers love to rant about useless peer reviews—then hand out the same empty lines. “Nicely written” isn’t a contribution, and “these evals aren’t enough” needs a chapter & verse. Give authors feedback they can act on, please. — Your (tired) @NeurIPSConf Area Chair
