Trump’s trade talks made it clear: on critical minerals, China holds the cards. The U.S. needs more than stockpiles and subsidies - we need to rebuild market infrastructure so the U.S. and allies can compete. New @FT piece from Daleep Singh (w/ me contributing). 🧵 1/

There's so much handwaving about how "AI will cure cancer" or "AI will revolution science" What we need are more specific, actionable ideas for how AI could accelerate science & security Dropping next week: @IFP will publish 15 "AI for science" ideas from experts.
love to see what seems like a clear-eyed view of how we get nukes to scale. on the back of the failures of offshore wind, blue states like NJ have a lot of capital lying around and a lot of need for clean gen. could make for some interesting and important nuke plays!
Third, we need a reliable source of electricity generation that can meet our state’s need for decades to come – and that’s nuclear power. I’ll work with neighboring states to harness economies of scale and expand safe nuclear power capacity in New Jersey at a low cost, which will…
It’s hard to get your head around being this good at a sport for 30 years, from a young teenager to mid-40s.
Wow. Wow. WOW! 45 year old Legend Venus Williams, playing her first singles match since march 2024, defeats world #35 Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 to reach the 2nd round in Washington WTA 500. Hit 9 aces. That's her first singles win since august 2023. Simply UNREAL.
Looking forward to hearing more here I’m glad there’s an appreciation for 1) the unique long-term benefits of nuclear power, 2) economies of scale (!), & 3) the need to coordinate with other states if we’re going to have any chance of getting nuclear right wrt costs & time

A new study finds that when hospitals acquire physician practices, those doctors raise their prices by 15% within 2 years compared to independent peers. Healthcare M&A should be about integration and efficiencies. Too often, it's just about leveraging higher reimbursements rates.
Check out @RadWill_'s guest post for @employamerica! Evidence AI is already accounting for labor mkt weakness is thin. But I wouldn't be shocked if firms that went big on capex and now looking to cut back spending use AI as a tactical justification for labor cuts (a la 2000-03)
A lot of people are blaming AI for grads’ poor outcomes, but I find the evidence for this claim is surprisingly thin. Excited to release a new analysis w/ @employamerica on the labor market performance of recent college grads. 🧵
It's fashionable to blame generative AI for high recent grad unemployment — but the evidence doesn’t hold up. Check out @RadWill_'s analysis for @employamerica!

Good time to re-up this from @ThomasHochman
I’ve said from the beginning that this was going to be a boondoggle. EVs (especially the batteries) are terrible for the environment and are not economically viable without government giveaways. This plant will only result in higher utility costs for Kansans, and a huge bill…
Very cool that a geothermal company figured out how to jiggle the earth so hard that the rocks shatter for 100 meters straight down
But I don't think policymakers can wait until the data is unequivocally clear about the job impact of AI before starting to decide what to do about it. That's too late! It takes time to develop and implement responses, and so the work should begin now. 3/
I want to flag two good pieces out this morning that touch on AI and its job impacts. Both raise some questions about the analysis in our piece, but I don't think either reduces the need for policymakers to jump on this issue right away. 1/
The biggest economic issue that no one is talking about: AI is projected to replace 12 million jobs in the next decade. Americans say they're worried about it. But no national politician has a plan for it. A new piece with some ideas, from me, Zoe Jacobs, and Diego Haro. 1/
First, @RadWill_ has a strong piece noting that the impact of AI on recent grads is less clear than some have suggested (including our piece). It raises a number of good points about the murkiness of the data and I recommend reading it. 2/ employamerica.org/labor-market-a…
New from our guest writer @RadWill_ on the rise on recent graduate unemployment. Is it AI? Not so fast!

You can find our full report here. This analysis was quite a technical lift even with valuable input from industry experts. If we got anything about your particular mineral industry wrong, let us know and we can correct or update as needed. (END) thebreakthrough.org/issues/energy/…
We were really thrilled and grateful to release this report with a launch briefing at the Capitol yesterday featuring remarks from Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks @RepMMM and a great panel discussion with @IrvingSwisher, @GraceBaskaran, @royhouseman, and Scott Gemperline.
Price volatility and market manipulation undermine the investment case for new projects seeking to acquire missing capabilities. The ability of a mineral reserve program to increase price transparency + liquidity and stabilize markets can meaningfully re-risk such projects.
All of this suggests the US should consider a more active model for a US mineral resource reserve, as proposed by @employamerica and @BPC_Bipartisan and as articulated in draft bills like the Critical Materials Future Act and SECURE Minerals Act. ft.com/content/e948ae…
Should a US national critical minerals reserve program act more like the National Defense Stockpile or more like the Strategic Petroleum Reserve? A major new report by my team does a deep dive into this question, looking at 15 minerals relevant to energy. My thoughts🧵:
60% of the American companies on Fortune's list of top AI innovators have an immigrant founder. The world’s top talent overwhelmingly wants to come to US. This is a incredible advantage. American leadership in AI depends on allowing, even encouraging, high-skilled immigration.
