Useful dashboard from @the_tpa showing our ballooning benefits bill. Pay attention to turquoise Universal Credit, grey state pension, and pink Personal Independence Payments.
Good thing our debt isn’t linked to inflation, otherwise this rise would mean an even higher debt interest bill for taxpayers (already over £100bn a year)… Oh wait, 25% of our debt is index linked 😬
The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 3.6% in the 12 months to June 2025, up from 3.4% in the 12 months to May. Read the full article ➡️ ons.gov.uk/economy/inflat…

An absolute fighter. Great man. His Telegraph blogs and the way he got stuck in with the comments below the line were seminal reading for me and I imagine many other millennial right wingers. RIP 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/…
"Half of all British households are below median income. This is why we need greater state control of the economy" is the core belief of quite a large number of MPs (some in the Conservative party), and no amount of careful explanation about relative and absolute levels of income…
They’re just gonna keep making this argument as we slip down the table
I think it's under-appreciated in UK politics that now is just isn't a good time for government to be borrowing more - or signaling that it intends to borrow more. We're in the middle of what has been described as a "global bond glut". Borrowing is expensive. It's not the 2010s.
🚨BREAKING: Labour have bottled their welfare reforms and caved into their rebels, with the bill now barely saving £2.5bn over the next few years This is timid tinkering from a government quickly running out of steam. Our head of research @darwin_friend1 explains 👇
Excellent speech from Conservative leader @KemiBadenoch on the welfare bill today. Impressive clarity on this issue And great to hear her cite @the_tpa new benefits dashboard - which reveals that people with conditions like acne and food intolerance are receiving benefits
This kind of meddling is just dumb. Too clever by half
This change would only affect Cash ISAs, which is the most popular ISA product. There are no plans to change the threshold for others Reeves sees the move as a way to boost the stock market by encouraging savers to shift from cash to shares
We've heard from Liz Kendall how much the government's Welfare Bill retreat will cost. How are they going to pay for it? Spending cuts elsewhere? Tax hikes in the Autumn? More borrowing? Do they have any answer at all?
