New @ukonward polling shows that concerning numbers of young Brits are flirting with communism and fascism I was a teen Lefty - but collectivism is a fool’s errand Politicians just need to start actually using their mandate My latest in @CapX👇 capx.co/britains-antid…
"It’s been repeated ad nauseum, but we need to build more homes." Good point, well made!

Coverage of this story in today's @Telegraph by @tweetsbyames telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/2…
This is a humiliating introduction from the @DVSAgovuk chair. Waiting times are 22 weeks on average for driving tests, and are rising. Yet he is "particularly proud of our environmental achievements, having reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from our 2017-18 baseline"
Aka we’re utterly abysmal at our core function - but hey we’ve put light sensors in the toilets so it’s all good folks

🚨 The latest public sector finance stats for June just dropped from @ONS and they're a fiscal horror show. Borrowing up, debt interest up, deficit up, spending up and taxes up. Here's what you need to know about how the government's finances are spiralling🧵
And the pension is ridiculous. Get paid £200k *and then* get £133k added to your pension pot
Some startling pay rises in the Treasury last year. Perm sec, James Bowler, saw a pay rise of about £10,000 to approximate £200k. Plus a £15-20k bonus Incredibly the Director General for *Productivity and Growth*, Jessica Glover, got a pay rise of about £40,000 to £150,000
Also from Treasury accounts - even after fiddling the figures by changing the definition of debt, net financial debt still rose by 1.7 percentage points To 82.5 per cent of GDP

This is worth reading. But @the_tpa are wrong to call for a statutory cap. We should be abolishing the cap on all councils. They are elected bodies, the control on their taxation lies with the electorate not Whitehall.
Dozens of councils, in places most will never have heard of, doubled council tax in 2024-25 That includes eleven which increased rates by 300 per cent, and one which hiked rates by *1,783 per cent* All without a referendum How is this even possible? 🧵
