A team led by @PrincetonNeuro's Mala Murthy (@MurthyLab) and @sebastianseung has mapped a fly's entire brain — a new step in understanding brain diseases in humans. bit.ly/3BCz1pz
News: Researchers fully map neural connections of the fruit fly brain nih.gov/news-events/ne…
The first wiring diagram of the whole brain of a fruit fly, containing around 140,000 neurons and over 50 million connections, is presented in a paper in @Nature. go.nature.com/3BChkqa
Papers reporting the fly whole-brain connectome were published in @Nature today 🎉 and it was my honor to write a News and Views about them Congrats to @sdorkenw, @SebastianSeung, @MurthyLab, @gsxej, and the @FlyWireNews team! + great 🧵 below from David nature.com/articles/d4158…
Here it is! A huge milestone in neuroscience – the complete connectome of the fly brain from the FlyWire team (@FlyWireNews). In this special issue, we have 9 research articles. I’ll try to summarize them in a couple threads starting here 🧵
We are excited to share educational materials designed to bring FlyWire into classrooms! We have designed interactive lessons to be used by high school and college teachers, instructors, or scientists doing outreach. Check it out: codex.flywire.ai/academy_home Image by @exp_perception
The fly has a full #connectome, basically a directed + weighted graph. But what are its connection ‘signs’, excitatory/inhibitory? We move towards this answer, predicting transmitters from EM! w/@BobQubit, vid @amyneurons, 1/n Published @CellCellPress: cell.com/cell/fulltext/…
Introducing a new connectomic dataset of the adult fly central nervous system: the Brain And Nerve Cord (BANC). Tomorrow 11a ET at @FlyWireNews’ town hall. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…
Congratulations to the newest class of the Shenoy Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Neuroscience (SURFiN)! The 75 talented undergrads will gain hands-on research experience under the mentorship of early career scientists incl. grad students & postdocs. simonsfoundation.org/2023/09/26/sim…
A new study by @alin1194 @RunzheYang et. al. has analyzed the statistical properties of the whole adult fly brain, comparing connectivity of neuropil (brain regions) in the fly and drawing comparisons between species. Preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… animation: @amyneurons
One quick teaser - @DudiFly and Kaiyu Wang identified nearly all sexually-dimorphic neurons brainwide - now possible to trace information flow for social communication and female-specific behaviors. Here is a subset of fru/dsx neurons (render from @alin1194):
Excited to announce the completion of the first adult brain connectome - FlyWire is the neuronal wiring diagram of a Drosophila melanogaster brain with >130K neurons and >32M synapses. Explore at codex.flywire.ai. Check out the preprints:
We are releasing a whole-brain connectome of the fruit fly, including ~130k annotated neurons and tens of millions of typed synapses! Explore the connectome: codex.flywire.ai Reconstruction paper: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… Annotation paper: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/6
All NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports editors have resigned over the high publication fee, and are starting a new non-profit journal imaging-neuroscience.org This comes with great regret, and a huge amount of thought and discussion- please read announcement to get more details.
