Aymenn J Al-Tamimi
@ajaltamimi
So thrilled to announce you can now read a free online sample of my translation and study of 'Fath al-Andalus' ('The Conquest of al-Andalus') for Routledge. It also appears that the e-book version is available for purchase at a discount price! play.google.com/store/books/de…
Coming up tonight researcher and analyst Aymenn Al-Tamimi (@ajaltamimi) joins us to discuss the conflict & human rights violations in southern Syria as well as the newly published STG findings on the coastal massacres. Join us live on Twitch or catch up later on YouTube.
If some criticising Rami for bringing up bad aspects of Sharaa’s past were to apply same logic, they shouldn’t say anything bad about Hijri’s past: after all, a lot of discourse about him was used to drum up support for the disastrous mobilisation of govt forces & tribal militias
Is it wise to preserve only a positive account of any leader's history? If not, why are those who recall Al-Sharaa's verified negative record being shamed? Suppressing this info while allowing sanitized portrayals to dominate the info-space is politicized historical revisionism.
Agreed. And to be clear to outsiders: please don’t use what has happened in Al-Suwayda’ as something to exploit for ideological pet projects and talking points, or cheerlead what has been a horrible experience for Druze and Bedouin civilians.
Honestly, the entire episode has been disappointing to see who has simply become cheerleaders for their sect of choice....or even knowing basic info about Druze armed groups and their stances. (On a lighter note, it has been great for my imposter syndrome)
Translation: Harakat Rijal al-Karama statement making clear (i) Layth al-Balous is not affiliated w/movement as pro-govt pundits & media keep inaccurately claiming; (ii) the movement views the govt forces' violations as main reason for the conflict aymennaltamimi.com/p/harakat-rija…
Really is a sign of poor journalism and coverage of Suwayda’ when Layth Al-Balous is described as a ‘leader in Harakat Rijal Al-Karama.’ He is no such thing.
The Israeli incursion into parts of Qunaytra and Deraa is a stupid policy. But there is no good evidence to suggest any Israeli plan along the lines of what is suggested below (which would also be insane: e.g. how would Israel plan to occupy the entirety of Deraa province?)
By the way if you want to know why Israel is so obsessed with breaking off and occupying southern Syria it has nothing to do with protecting the Druze or border security or other narratives now being put forward for public consumption. The territory comprises the ancient Jewish…
Really strikes me how callous some external pundits are when they claim exact same things would’ve happened in Syria had Assad resigned in 2011. Here’s a sample photo I took from Damascus suburbs. This devastation wouldn’t have happened had Assad de-escalated by resigning in 2011
Assad wasn't the problem in Syria. Had Assad resigned in 2011, it's almost certain that what we see happening today would have happened back then already. There are no good, i.e. democratic, choices for Syria. Democracy, western style, does not work there, sorry.
Good @ajaltamimi corrective on Suweida violence, including on nature of Druze armed resistance: aymennaltamimi.com/p/misconceptio… (open access)
I agree with a lot of what Aymenn says here, and we both agree with the immediate imperative to stop hostilities that are now overwhelmingly being committed against an outnumbered set of Druze forces. We disagree on al-Hijri, whereby I subscribe to the belief that he sadly 1/2
I have done a general, open access piece on the common misconceptions about the fighting in al-Suwayda'. Too many crude, inaccurate talking points are being circulated among analysts and observers and contributing to the tensions. This needs to stop now aymennaltamimi.com/p/misconceptio…
Really good explainer. Key points: - Druze mobilization broader, more fragmented than focus on Hijri suggests - Narrative of "separatism" is baseless & inflammatory - Onus on Damascus to prove it can impose order - External pundits are "echoing crude social media talking points"

I commend my friend Sohrab’s stance against the fraudulent ‘Philos Project’ & its director’s lack of empathy for Christian suffering in Gaza & West Bank (just as he uses Christian suffering in Al-Suwayda’ amid assault of pro-govt tribal militias to engage in…advocacy for Israel)
This is beyond insulting. Many of us have been at the forefront of those advocacy battles, too. Here's what actually happened: In your only statement(s) on the Holy Family attack, you failed to express even a scintilla of sympathy and concern for the victims. Instead, you…
Some supporters of Assad exploit current events to say they were right all along. To you I say: in 2011 the burden on Assad was to prove himself a responsible actor by resigning or introducing real reforms to do away w/hereditary dictatorship. He completely failed in that regard.
Rami, I have countless videos from the first weeks of the “democratic movement”, people being slaughtered, bodies thrown into rivers, others pushed off rooftops. Let’s stop this nonsense.
Amazes me people take this Aimen Dean seriously. Layth al-Balous doesn't lead the 'Men of Dignity movement'...He broke off from movement & runs the 'al-Karama Guesthouse', which had a notable faction affiliated w/it at one point (Shaykh al-Karama Forces, which has now broken off)
A Tale of Two Druze Leaders - and One Perplexing Israeli Policy This is not about the clash between Druze and Bedouin militias in Syria, or the broader friction between Suwayda and Damascus. That story has been repeatedly distorted by oversimplifications, one side painted as…
Can’t stress enough what a blessing solar power has been for my home in Syria, drastically cutting reliance on dirty diesel generators that lead to very expensive electricity bills for constantly running devices like a fridge

Some people who fashion themselves as ‘pro-Israel’ may say settlers who go on rampages against Palestinians & their property are only a minority. While that is true, the actual issue (as in any place) is accountability. The system does little or nothing to hold them accountable.
When I called these Israeli extremists "terrorists," I got some angry/abusive responses from some readers -- not, of course, from Israelis, who agree with me, but from pro-Israel people abroad. But these are actual terrorists. They target innocent civilians. They hate other…
Yes, there are Christians who speak out about Gaza or Taybeh and also care about persecution and violence committed against Christians by Muslims in Syria. That’s not difficult to do if you have principles…
Will the Christians speaking out about Gaza and Taybeh speak out on this? Or do Christians only matter when they are killed by Jews?
Sound thread here on the differences between modern historical criticism and traditional Islamic methods for evaluating ‘authenticity’ of hadiths. I don’t think anyone applying the former would look at a single Hadith and think: ‘Yes, the Prophet Muhammad used these exact words.’
The idea that the traditional method of Hadith criticism can be reconciled with the historical critical method (HCM) is unrealistic. Some minor overlaps aside, the 2 methods have completely different premises.🧵
Or maybe Olmert is just genuinely concerned about how a ‘humanitarian city’ in Gaza will be perceived internationally and further damage Israel’s reputation? If you think he’s wrong you can explain why w/o making silly accusations.
He’s an Iranian asset. At this point, that’s the only explanation timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry…
