A Cyerce kikutarobabai nudibranch from Okinawa. This one is very tiny - 3 mm long. I found it bouncing in the waves being torn from the reef by the water power. It was flying like a pink dot among the muddy water with debris.
Phyllodocid polychaete worm. The everting pharynx is crazy. Okinawa.
Hydrozoan jellyfish Scolionema sp. from Okinawa, 7 mm in diameter.
DeepMind just dropped a 106-page paper unveiling AlphaGenome. This single model could completely redefine how we discover disease-causing mutations and drug targets. This is massive. 🧵
Excited to share #AlphaGenome, a start of our AlphaGenome named journey to decipher the regulatory genome! The model matches or exceeds top-performing external models on 24 out of 26 variant evaluations, across a wide range of biological modalities.1/6
The longer video of Cyerce kikutarobabai nudibranch is now on youtube. I hope you will enjoy it: youtu.be/-YF9AQxVYS0?fe…
Found these terrestrial hermit crabs while visiting OIST.
Absolutely thrilled to share with you the final version of EPIclone, out now (open access) in @Nature. This has been an amazing collaboration with the lab of Lars Velten (@larsplus) at @CRGenomica nature.com/articles/s4158…
Here is our new review article: “The role of microheterogeneity in cell fate decisions in neural progenitors and neural crest” sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Check it out if you are curious about how cell cycle or transcriptional noise affect fate selection in cell lineages.
If you want to run MERFISH spatial transcriptomics and you search for the optimized probe codebooks, here they are: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Beautiful cnidarians
A #Siphonophore, which is often mistaken for #jellyfish, are quite common in the midwater environment. This species has a bubble of CO connected to its “top” to self-right. PSA - it’s on the “do not lick” list. #nematocysts #blackwater #scuba #scubadiving #gug #gugunderwater
1/9 New preprint out! 🍳 Our team at @EMBL, @DKFZ, and @MSKCancerCenter built #segger—a fast, accurate cell segmentation tool for ST. It’s a transcript-to-cell link predictor that matches transcripts to their cell origins in a snap!

You know you have found your science buddy when you are both saying ‘I like the way you think’
I want to tell you a story about computers, creativity and awe! (1/N)🧵 Sydney Brenner once said in 2012 that “nobody has actually read the human genome. I mean, computers have processed the human genome, but we all know computers are stupid.” (This is a talk I gave last week..)
