I was delighted to take part for the first time in a global philosophy (history/sociology) of biology meeting! #ISHPSSB2025 in Porto! Thanks #JavierSuarez for the invite about Neglected perspectives in Agency. I talked about Fungal Agency.

The content of my talk “Fungal agency” at the #ISHPSSB Porto 2025 meeting. Very happy to be on this kind of conference for the first time!

A fascinating looking session at the #ISHPSSB meeting in Porto. Unfortunately is at the same time when my session and talk (“Fungal Agency”) is.

Next week Ill be presentig for the first time at the Biennial meeting of the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology. Just now I am checking the program and #PhilipBall is one of the speakers! His latest book is just fantastic!

Universities evolved into machines obsessed with branding, grants, and bureaucracy. Science became collateral damage.
Im currently embracing “controversy”, or at least from the view of typical biologists. Those views are sort of mainstream for philosophers of biology and antrhopologists.
I went into academia to search for truth. I left learning how to write safe grants, avoid controversy, and serve bureaucrats.
Our @mycorrhiza_ims Newsletter No. 16 is coming very soon. It included a @southmycorrhiza YouTube interview with @mrillig, ICOM12 meeting report, short article, Top 10 mycorrhizal papers and more!

Having written this, I get a new appreciation on how smart and brave Varela and Humberto Maturana were. Not easy to go against 5 centuries of cognitivist bias. Happy one of my awards is named after Maturana.
Paper just published in #Symbiosis: Parise AG, Marín C, Tamagnini F, Tibbett M, Pickles BJ. 2025. How mycorrhizal fungi could extend plant cognitive processes. Symbiosis. DOI: doi.org/10.1007/s13199… As an almost-Chilean it feels great to cite Maturana in a mycorrhizal paper

Another one very much recommended! But, at least for me, hard to understand on a first read!

From 11 News reports in our @ISMEJournal paper “Functional Team Selection” with #NancyCollinsJohnson, this one in @EarthDotCom is the best one! Eric Ralls: “Plants have microbiomes like humans do, now scientists have learned how they work” earth.com/news/plants-ha… #Holobiont

Im on holiday in Morroco, and on a random street in Marakesh, heard someone calling my name. It was my recent colleague, the biomatematician, Tomas Veloz, Professor both in Chile and in Belgium. What are the chances! Check Tomás work: scholar.google.com/citations?user…

Im now formally on the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) of the GSP-FAO, with other 26 experts from the planet. Very happy with this!

Check out this citizen science sampling between @RewildingChile & @spununderground, with this film directed by Mateo Barrenengoa in which me and Rocío Urrutia-Jalabert collaborated. We’ll find out whether bigger Alerces associate with higher AMF biodiversity. #Mycorrhiza
