Grateful to have been part of this cool story! Thinking back, my inner budding pathologist totally drew me to all the microscopy we did to hunt down NETs in urinary tracts and urine affected by UTI and THP loss. Check it out! 👇🏼
After almost a decade (started while I was a postdoc with @victornizet and finished by @Vicki_Mercado1), I'm happy to see this finally out. We found that Tamm-Horsfall protein, the most abundant protein in urine, enhanced NETosis to protect against UTI. insight.jci.org/articles/view/…
The good idea comes when one person feels comfortable enough to say something that might make them look stupid and their friend is open enough to recognize its potential.

Why is preterm birth risk doubled with maternal UTI? It depends on the immune response. We found distinct immune signatures in a UTI-associated preterm birth mouse model. In a human cohort from @AShea_Lab, urine cytokine levels could predict preterm birth. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

This is phenomenal! What an excellent example of practical support for early career trainees who are caregivers!
As a med student who had 2 children during med school I'm often asked what kind of support I need, and besides the obvious like childcare, I never had a good answer. This elective at the University of Minnesota is the definition of support, all med schools should take notes.
An amazing second day in #CAP24, I have the pleasure to meet @MeredithKHerman @Baskotacytopath @Vicki_Mercado1
#CAP24 was one for the books!! Was so much fun connecting with old friends and making new ones. The @Pathologists community is truly spectacular.
