What is the gravest ecological challenge? Global heating, mass extinction, pollution? My new book, ‘Just Earth’, published by @BloomsburyBooks & which is out in March, suggests it’s actually social inequalities.
Two decades of tireless work restoring habitat & creating eco-mooring sites (so boats' anchors don't tear seagrass out by the roots) by @seahorsecharity & @NOCnews, has paid off with a spectacular summer of seahorses off the Dorset coast this year 🌊 share.google/EeKyHpTRJ3QcDw…
The England Peat Map team were delighted to welcome our chair @TonyJuniper & chief scientist, @SallieBailey20 last week to Chippenham Fen National Nature Reserve 🌱 It was a wonderful day of #peat probing, data demonstrations & dam dissection🪱
We’re proud to partner with @NationalTrust and @HeritageFundUK to bring nature home. 🌳 Together we’re enabling millions more people to enjoy green space close to home. By investing in nature and green growth, we’re creating better places for people to live, work and thrive.
We’re delighted to announce a new mission with @NationalTrust and @NaturalEngland to enable millions more people to enjoy nature and green spaces close to home, including £15million of awards thanks to #NationalLottery players. 🌳 (1/3)
Many claiming the summer of '76 was as hot as recent years. These images should clarify that is not the case: June 1976 vs June 2025 global temp anomaly. Since 1976, an estimated 1.5 trillion tonnes of CO₂ have been emitted from human activities. This is a new #climate
In my capacity as Chair of the rainforest organisation @coolearth , I wrote a piece about why assisting indigenous communities with no-strings cash transfers makes enormous sense in our in-going efforts to limit rapid climate change. commentcentral.co.uk/this-is-the-be…
The Risley, Holcroft and Chat Moss National Nature Reserve launches today! With partners, we're restoring peatlands that are over 10,000 years old. @CheshireWT @Lancswildlife @WiganCouncil, Woodland Trust, @ForestryEngland @WarringtonBC gov.uk/government/new… #NatureRecovery
Great to be in the Northwest to help declare another new National Nature Reserve - Risley, Holcroft & Chat Moss NNR. Home to the industrial revolution, the new NNR expands the green infrastructure needed for the ecological revolution that must get underway bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
In a world that sometimes seems full of awfulness, King Charles this week shone a beacon of hope at his ‘Harmony Summit’. I found it to be a powerful gathering, full of inspiration, if we can only see things differently (as so many indigenous peoples do). bbc.com/news/articles/…
Dartmoor is hot & dry. Fire risk high & great caution needed. In adapting to climate shifts we might wish to expand temperate rainforests there & elsewhere. The open moorland is tinder dry. Rainforest 200 metres away is cool & relatively moist & at lower risk of combustion.

While those opposed to climate action cite alleged high costs, the OBR says it’s much lower than thought, & much cheaper than the costs of inaction. Also note that part of the ‘cost’ cited by sceptics is down to loss of petrol taxes as we move to EVs! carbonbrief.org/obr-net-zero-i….
Big news. At @coolearth we are taking our model of direct support for indigenous rainforest communities into the Colombian Amazon. Making a positive impact for people, Nature & climate all at once, & at low cost. coolearth.org/news/cool-eart…
Hearing a lot lately that since the UK emits only 1% of greenhouse gases that we shouldn’t bother cutting emissions. Truth is that over 90% of 195 nations in the Paris accord can make that same claim. We are not special. All countries must play an ambitious role & no time to lose
A hundred years ago, the Seine was declared too polluted to swim in. Today, it’s open again. A reminder that with investment and political will, rivers can be brought back to life. In the end, it’s a choice.
Worth reading. Also worth remembering that a proportion of the recharge in the aquifer is from rain clouds that originate over the Amazon rainforest. If that ecosystem continues to shrink (to the point of potential collapse), so will food security in North America (& the world).
First they drain the aquifer. Then they switch crops. Soon, there won’t be water for any crops. Depletion of major groundwater source threatens Great Plains farming pbs.org/newshour/show/…
Finance must align with the Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF and #GlobalGoals. At #cityweek2025 I joined H.E. @MaryCreagh_ and @TonyJuniper in a reflection on how investing in #PeaceWithNature constitutes an investment in economic resilience and our common future.
Biodiversity is the foundation of life on🌍Among other benefits, it provides immense investment opportunities. On 30 June @SchomakerAstrid will convey @UNBiodiversity's voice at #CityWeek2025 Net Zero Finance Innovation Summit. 🟢Programme & line-up: cityweekuk.com/city-week-2025…
Natural England chief ‘enthusiastic about reintroducing lynx to Britain and would be “absolutely delighted” if it could be achieved during his two-year term.’ There are no good reasons not to have lynx back. Come on England, let’s do this! theguardian.com/environment/20…
Good to see @TonyJuniper keen to see Eurasian Lynx reintroduction happen sooner rather than later. Just like Beavers, the benefits massively outweigh the disbenefits. If we weren’t an island they would be here by now and no-one would bat an eyelid. theguardian.com/environment/20…
