Mom to 4, reading & writing teacher to many, reformed Gen X teacher who embraced the science of learning
Every article, study, interview shows the 1st step to improve reading results for kids: adults have to be tired of failure enough to reflect and make tough changes. But many refuse to slaughter their sacred cows. "We just have to keep doing this/that." Then you get what you get.

Ironic that the research on learning coming largely from the US is exported over the pond and may be the source of rising scores. Keep trying @MrZachG

Why does struggle sound sexy to people? It sounds awful to me, but that’s a world view informed by the fact that I’ve seen many kids struggling from disadvantaged backgrounds that could be caught up and motivated with systematic instruction in the thing they’re struggling at.
✳️without knowledge there is no critical thinking✳️ Don’t fall for the fantasy that our learners no longer need content knowledge. They will have nothing to think critically about.
Education that prioritises "21st-century skills" over content knowledge is like teaching someone to fish by removing all the fish from the lake. You can't think critically about nothing, collaborate meaningfully around ignorance, or create innovatively from an empty vessel.
Day 12: I had my class do some Turn and Talks today. It went great. Changing the way students answer questions from notebooks to whiteboards to peer discussions to cold call to choral response keeps engagement levels high and keeps kids learning and retrieving throughout the day.
20 years ago, we had the internet and people were making exactly the same argument. 120 years ago, we had libraries and people were making exactly the same argument. For the last ten years, people have insisted that *nobody* has ever made this argument. The argument:
Anthropic co-founder Ben Mann on why he chose Montessori for his daughter: "If this were 10-20 years ago, I'd be lining her up for top-tier schools and extracurriculars. But now I don't think any of it's going to matter. Learning facts is going to fade into the background. What…
"Learning facts is going to fade into the background." 🤦♂️ Quick thread on why this is a terrible take🧵⬇️

The Wheels on the Bus was written in 1937 but motorised buses date back to the 1890s. There was a forty year period where people were just getting on buses with no idea of what was going to happen.
I would love to train in person with Dr. Anita Archer.

Some celebrity deaths hit harder, maybe just because they embody your childhood or adolescence in a more powerful way than others. I feel like I’ve known Malcolm-Jamal Warner my whole life. Prayers for his family.
RIP to the great Malcolm Jamal Warner, my generation grew up on him

The golden sunlight in this autochrome is absolutely spectacular! I have cleaned up this remarkable photograph of three ladies of Lyon, picking fruit during the Golden Hour, 115 years ago. It was taken by Professor Fernand Arloing in 1910. It is original colour, not colourised.
