Like peer tutoring, it asks students to put an explanation in their own, clear, words. And as writers know, you really know it if you can put it down clearly so someone else can get it!

Without an understanding of human cognitive architecture, instruction is blind, says Sweller. Indeed, this is why we have structured literacy and unstructured math, and we explicitly teach kids PowerPoint, but not the content they need to put inside the PowerPoint.
