This week I am celebrating being at Birmingham for a year! Amazing progress as we have launched two trials first in Europe! My main aim for the 2nd year is to get patients with pancreas and biliary cancer from their CT to first cycle of treatment having a pathway of 6 weeks!!
Delighted to be starting as an associate professor today @unibirmingham and honorary consultant in HPB medical oncology @uhbtrust @UHBCancer. Continuing to build an exciting translational programme in pancreatic cancer and translational immuno-oncology
100% true
The bottom line with all NHS staff, not just doctors, is that unless you make the NHS a decent place to work, with a decent enough salary to be able to pay off your debts and afford to buy a house near where you work, or at least know where you’re going to be working in the next…
🧠 This chart popped up in my feed via @balajis It shows the exponential growth in human brain size and complexity over evolutionary time. It got me thinking about oncology. Cancer medicine now sits at the convergence of: 🧬 Biological complexity 🙏 Moral gravity 🚀…

🤠 👉🏽 🗽 news: I will be joining @nyulangone on September 1, 2025 as Director of the GI Cancer Center & Associate Director of Translational Research at @Perlmutter_CC. I am excited to start the next chapter of the Maitra Lab in NYC & build a strong GI cancer research program.
Super proud of our trials team today! We have randomised the first patient in the UK to a major phase 3 trial in pancreatic cancer that has the potential to change first line treatment for patients.
Delighted to have the opportunity to present to the NIHR strategy board on Birmingham’s leading pancreatic cancer trial portfolio with infant in tow (inset day equals daddy day care).
Great to be @unibirmingham for the @NIHRresearch Strategy and Engagement Board. Yesterday, we heard from local researchers about their experiences delivering research in Birmingham, including @ShivanSivakumar and NIHR’s youngest researcher 👨🔬👨👦🧪🏥
I would love to see a real world evidence study of giving mounjaro or ozempic to newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients in the nhs. It would be a gamechanger for patients and the nhs.
I promised to come back to @X after I investigated the facts concerning @EPotterMD's video post about @UHC and its health insurance subsidiary, UnitedHealthcare. To review, I made an @X post in response to Dr. Potter's videos and X posts about an overzealous representative of…
Yesterday, I made a critical post about @EPotterMD and her experience with United Healthcare. I took it down when my office heard from the Clare Locke firm which represents UNH which called and stated that the doctor’s claims were not true. We have used Clare Locke and think…
Well said! How we have let postgrad training turn into this international free for all is incredible. Not sure why we need a review to do this. Why leave a whole generation of UK doctors dissatisfied
The solution to this is simple. To change medicine away from being a shortage profession under UK immigration law and to prioritise UK medics. Complete waste of UK taxpayer funding here. No other country’s medical profession behaves like this.
In 2024, applications for IMT outstripped the number of posts available by 73%. ‘We risk abandoning a generation of UK medical graduates to an uncertain future. We urgently need to understand why competition ratios are changing so quickly and improve the way we shortlist,…
Doctors are mugs for allowing this to happen The less you’ve trained the more you’re paid
If this was a doctor/nurse - their name would be all over the media with demands for justice, criminal charges & a trial- so why when an organisation, through organisational failure leads to deaths of pts do we not see someone from the organisation as being held responsible ??
New study led by Dr @ShivanSivakumar shows why there are differences in prognosis between different pancreatic tumours, understanding why in some instances immunotherapy fails, which will help identify potential avenues for improved treatment approaches. birmingham.ac.uk/news/2025/panc…
Ecstatic to see this out! Important implications for immune targeting in pancreatic cancer. Has been a labour of love! Lots of fantastic collaborators and important new early phase trials being set up! nature.com/articles/s4146…
Huge congratulations to @drdhruvparekh on his appointment as Medical Director of Research, Development & Innovation (RDI) @uhbtrust!🎉 A fantastic leader in Critical Care & Respiratory Medicine, Dhruv will drive cutting-edge RDI, strengthening ties with @unibirmingham & beyond 👏

2 Students start medical school in 2013 One drops out and becomes a PA, the other continues their Medical degree By 2021 the Medical Student is in their first GP training post... The PA is a GP Partner Madness
I told you so
I wonder how this would look if only UK applicants can apply in round 1!!! Everyone knows the reason for exponential rise in applicants and no other country in the world does this rubbish.
So far we have three specialties who have released the number of applicants for this years intake. All of which show an example trending towards exponential growth. This cannot continue and needs immediate intervention.
