Earlier in the year my vet advised we were at low risk of the bluetongue virus. He phoned me last week to say the situation has now changed with the easing of some of the control measures and he strongly recommended we should now vaccinate. I vaccinated all the sheep yesterday

A constantly changing industry. First time having to use a blue tongue vaccine here today as disease pressures in animals evolve Is this due to natural evolution or a warmer climate enabling the biting midges that spread the disease moving further North? @SaraPedersen3

Unfortunately diseases we once didn’t have to worry about are moving further N due to ⬆️ temps. Recent outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease in France is another example. All we can do is use tools we have, like vaccination, to protect livestock #DoNotWaitVaccinate #BattleBluetongue

Done all of mine, apart from 20 cull ewes and a dozen 37kg lambs. The point I make is even if it doesn't kill. Around £3 for a sheep and £12 for cattle is not much against the cost of extra feed and antibiotics/anti inflammatories , needed to get stock back on track and thriving
