Old Primary Head
@Oldprimaryhead1
Primary/Special head. I write, I ride and I lead - not always at the same time. Lessons from the Heads Office (available on Amazon). @headsroundtable and NAHT
The last day is a perfect example of the incredible emotions a headteacher has to deal with -euphoria, fear, anxiety, anticipation, love, anger and pride- you go from one moment to the next where these emotions can simmer and boil over. It is a unique experience.
I want to say the @HackneyAbbott is an absolute inspiration. A voice of compassion and dignity. If she continues to be treated in the way she so often is, I will leave @UKLabour.
Score the goal that gets your team back in the game. Strap your own injury because the physios are busy. Stick your head in where it hurts. Leather your penalty straight down the middle. Show the world what it means to play for your country. That’s the Lucy Bronze way…
Our teachers and headteachers are at the heart of everything we do. It’s encouraging to hear about the progress we’ve made together in the last year, and I’m determined to keep working with them to deliver the changes our schools need.
Primary schools! Something useful: the new govt document on Writing goes big on handwriting. No probs, Ruth Miskin has a handwriting programme (just out) for you to buy. Next year, Govt goes big on drawing straight lines. Stand by for the Ruth Miskin Straight Lines programme.
Just one tiny observation about the new writing curriculum: this is rubbish 'All writing is ultimately made up of sentences' A lot of poetry, playwriting, scriptwriting, ads, social media posts, dialogue in novels etc is not 'ulimately made up of sentences'.
Given that this was cited as one of the reasons Ruth Perry felt so much pressure, I find Oliver’s use of this to justify retaining grades really distasteful and disrespectful. Business as usual from @Ofstednews I see.
Teachers & parents: Ofsted is out of touch and doesn't care. Ofsted: but house prices!
Another out of touch, city-centric (most rural areas aren’t in the choice game) point of view… if this is why we have Ofsted… they are even more pointless.

Lovely day speaking at The Festival of Education as part of @HeadsRoundtable

Once more I see tweets about keynote talks delivered by people citing how to run a school but haven’t actually run a school themselves. Why do people pay money for this? Credibility comes from having actually done the job not from pretending you have.
Who else is at the Festival of Education on Friday? Say hello!
On this day in 2017… 🗓️ Famara Diedhiou signed for Bristol City! 🇸🇳 Throwback to when he scored one of the greatest goals to ever be disallowed… @famara2001 #BristolCity
Around 400 Palestinians, including dozens of children, have been killed while trying to get humanitarian assistance. I don’t recall these incidents (including this weekend) leading many papers or news bulletins. Are we really saying a few chants from a couple of musicians is more…
NEW BLOG: 12 years ago, Michael Gove "cracked down" on attendance and banned term time holidays. Again and again since then we have had "crackdowns" on attendance. The evidence says they don't work. It's time to change the approach. johncosgrove55.wordpress.com/2025/06/28/tim…
Waiting for bus home and knock into an ex student… lovely post glasto moment… such a blessed job!
