In recent weeks the majority of our calls have been from headteachers completely drained by utter nonsense from parents. Needs gripping: we know of three highly successful heads who have retired early due to this. If we know of three, imagine how many others! @educationgovuk
It’s the coordinated & sustained campaigns towards headteachers that my original post was about… …HTs often left isolated without any real right to reply, adequate legal response & in most of my examples, often poor LA & MAT support It is not okay!
The issue isn’t the length of the summer holiday, which is one of the shortest in the world. The issue is a lack of investment in clubs, activities, camps & things for kids to do. Schools aren’t a babysitting service & our core purpose risks being severely undermined.
The attempted academic argument is how kids suffer educationally being off for so long. Those bilingual Mediterranean kids, as one eg with their longer summer than ours, really must suffer…
How long before the nonsense circulates that the school summer break, despite being one of the shortest in the world, is too long in England? We need to stop conflating education with child care; they're different things.
How would schools get highly crucial building work done. Many key projects take 6 weeks without anyone in the building to complete…

An issue with views on behaviour is where some people choose to conflate authoritative (which is a teacher’s role) with being authoritarian (which is not desirable).
Just to say, I teach in the Middle East and the children finished when they stopped their exams in May and return to school on 1st September! Agree, schools are education establishments and the government should improve investment in holiday clubs
We would love some people that are working to book onto our summer camp based in Pershore. We accept childcare vouchers as well 👍
Absolutely - as you say even a quick Google search on comparative length of school holidays in other countries show that both in summer holiday lengths and total annual holiday lengths we are an outlier - with shorter school holidays than most.
Length of school summer holidays in other countries. It shouldn't be up to school to sort out summer child care arrangements. What about local councils, social services etc....
In the more densely populated areas there are holiday clubs but yeah nowhere near enough. Paradoxically if the summer was 2 months (common in fee paying and across the world) that would open up a market in holiday provision.
How to sum up the debate in one 'tweet'. We are not free childcare & that's coming from a mum to two! 🙃

This week @dustonschool we say farewell to two colleagues who are retiring having given 27 and 48 years to the school. Incredible!
If we want to break the link between background & success then statements such as grades don’t make kids happy need to go where they belong, in a bin. Of course we want kids to enjoy school & learning but grades matter & open up so many doors for them.
I fully agree with this. The overwhelming majority of kids are absolutely ruddy brilliant.
Sometimes I wish that the whole of society had the empathy, passion and insight that I see 16/17 year olds demonstrating every day. Like all cohorts there is a range but we shouldn’t make negative assumptions about the contribution they will make to our political society.
