Meshes with my administrative experience.
I wrote about the lack of administrative support for the liberal arts in @nytimes. The standard story we hear is that students don't want it. But a darker reality is that even when it wins big with students and donors it loses with those in power. nytimes.com/2025/07/17/opi…
The math of the air war in Ukraine is simple. Yes, air defenses are needed but there will never be enough expensive Patriots etc. The only way to stop Putin from bombarding Ukrainian cities is by helping Ukraine strike deep inside Russia, against the Russian defense-industrial…
Mike Lee’s “based” online persona and Trump-era theatrics are a source of growing alarm among LDS church leaders, @sambbenson reports. “Mike Lee is far-right,” said one emeritus general authority. “The church is not far-right.” politico.com/news/magazine/…
I replied to your message in my head several days ago did you not get it
I would love to read a general interest book about how pretty much every major world cuisine as we know it was completely reinvented over a period of 50-100 years in the wake of the Colombian exchange--chilis coming to India and China, tomatoes to Italy, etc. etc.
Just remember: Not a single European, much less any Italian, had eaten a tomato until the 16th century.
This property tax stuff is a fake crisis in Ohio created almost entirely by the state government being unreliable partners to their local counterparts. And the talk about all the seniors suffering rings hollow when they can sell their house for massive profit.
Don’t be fooled by their rhetoric. The reason property taxes are rising in Ohio is because the nation’s most corrupt statehouse strips billions away from local services and schools in order to pay for giveaways like vouchers for private schools and tax cuts for Ohio’s 1%.
The Ohio House meets at 11 this morning to take up three of Gov. Mike DeWine’s 67 line-item budget vetoes. A three-fifths majority, or 59 votes, is needed to override. The budget passed with 59 votes, so Republicans can’t lose any votes. by Karen Kasler wvxu.org/2025-07-21/ohi…
Very interesting and links up with what one observes walking through public spaces in universities.
Anticipated this statistic when we noticed that our classroom had become 65% female, and the back row was 15 Braydens who all appeared to be struggling just to keep from swallowing their tongues. -OS
As college has become a vehicle for women to establish themselves personally and professionally (and maybe find a partner, but that's a secondary goal at most) men have checked the fuck out. The trick is to re-engage men without harming the gains made by women. -OS
This is sad for the country though. These young men have minds, but they are not engaged like the young women's are. Why?
Yes, it was necessary to feed my 11 month old child her night time bottle at like 9:00 pm. Thank you for asking.
Hey Rooker…did you really need to feed your baby on camera? Sometimes people just want to see you play
*Sardonic laugh* (Also, the bit would have more reach if you replace biz school with "lab sciences now facing caps on indirect costs.")
The business school over-expanded, and enrollments are lagging. So below are planned cuts in the College of Arts & Humanities. We are, after all, one university!
Russia will no longer publish any demographic data. From now on, it’s a state secret. Key reason, of course, number of killed in Ukraine.

Who’s ready for a July 4th tradition unlike any other?
Years ago was in Italy and was talking to geologists up there, and I asked them about if they still had the quarry that Michalanglo used, and they were like yes, and also its the same one the ancient Romans used, and also your mental image of some of the quarries is wrong, its…
marble feels fake when I see this. Like, youre telling me there are pretty smooth rocks this big? I'm gonna look up how marble is created
So much for state government transparency... Gov. Mike DeWine signs measure allowing Ohio lawmakers to shield their texts, emails from public view We hired the help, we're paying their bills, but they're allowed to hide important material from the bosses cleveland.com/news/2025/07/g…
Ah, the 1880s, a simpler time when a senatorial candidate could write and circulate pamphlets warning that Chinese immigration will overrun the country while simultaneously renting his massive DuPont Circle mansion to China for use as its US embassy.
When Tester lost, it was the sign that rural America is fully cooked. Montana always elected at least one union lawyer or cattle auction boss who actually understood how everything works -- Tester, Baucus, Metcalf, Mansfield, Wheeler. Montana is now represented by Zillow. -OS
