Our mission is to create/sustain a supportive community of scientists, showcasing indispensable role of nonhuman primates in scientific and medical discovery
🐒 Monkeys: Unlocking the Brain’s Mysteries 🐒 Monkeys play a vital role in neuroscience research, helping scientists understand complex diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and autism. Their contributions have also led to the development of life-saving vaccines. #BRADWeek2025
This would be a huge disservice to patients with neurological diseases. Speaking from my little corner of science, the remarkable recent progress in brain-computer interfaces to restore lost abilities (like speaking, moving, walking) were made possible by NHP studies!
Let’s just say I have my sources. I don’t necessarily think they’re going to stop it, but it’s extremely expensive and that makes it a candidate for the chopping block. Also, it’s controversial. The new trend elsewhere has been to maintain primates out of country where risk of…
Amazing work. From NHP to humans in one cycle !!
In a new study, funded in part by the @NIH #BRAINInitiative, researchers tested new technology that allows people with spinal injuries to feel complex sensations of touch. Learn more about this groundbreaking study: go.nih.gov/xGZbQmd #studyBRAIN
The new NIH director says “Second, NIH-supported science should be replicable, reproducible, and generalizable.” NHP are exactly that. One if not the most generalizable and reproducible research model organism.

Absolutely. Per study, NHPs are not more expensive than mice; they are less expensive.
Would be a huge mistake. Science is ready to study the brain circuits involved in some of the biggest mysteries (intelligence, mood, sanity) & how those go awry in brain disorders. Many of those brain circuits don't exist in mice & we can't study these things directly in humans.
One would think the Republican agenda would be to roll back the red tape to make research less costly and more efficient. And replicable. And translatable. If those were indeed their goals, of course.
@hubermanlab No airlines will fly primates (international or domestic). Trucking monkeys across the country costs tens of thousands of dollars each trip and requires getting permits for every state they travel through.
Spot on Bita! Additionally, NHP research is actually not more expensive than modern systems mouse work. It also makes up a tiny sliver of the fiscal pie despite its tremendous impact.
I doubt @hubermanlab or proponents of ketamine use know that without NHP research, that drug would not have been discovered It will be shortsighted to stop NHP research in US because "it is expensive" when a few NHPs may provide far more valuable data than thousands of mice
If you are interested in combining innovative models of substance use with pre-clinical MRI (at 9.4T and 15.2T, awake/behaving) and circuit interrogation, lets try for one of these together! Come join us! uwo.ca/research/fundi…
If you are interested in a post-doc studying the neural control of movement in humans or NHPs, check out this program and get in touch soon! uwo.ca/research/fundi…
You and we know we need more science not less science funding in the US to remain at a competitive advantage as well as solve problems of the 21st century. Example being NHP research. Neuralink has benefited greatly from our work. Therapies for tomorrow!
