This interview with @nbc6 anchor @LorenaInclanTV provides my opinion, as of Sunday night, of whether the already-implemented cuts to NOAA / NWS played any role in the Texas flooding tragedy, and whether current & future cuts could lead to more unnecessary loss of life.

“the Senate bill not only rejects nearly all of the cuts that the administration desires to science, in some cases they are proposing increases.” but… “there is a looming showdown on budget authority and science will be one of the key friction points” open.substack.com/pub/balancedwe…

It's T-minus two weeks until SSMIS satellite microwave scans go away. The peak of hurricane season lies ahead. "Cuts to Weather Services Could Threaten Hurricane Forecasts" from @VI_Source includes quotes from Dr. Robert Atlas, @FranklinJamesL and me👇🏼 stthomassource.com/content/2025/0…

"It isn’t surprising to see the number of extreme rain events in the U.S. and around the world multiply. A warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor, and now the hydrologic cycle we all learned about in middle school is turbocharged." My latest👇🏼nbcmiami.com/weather/hurric…

Monday night’s one hour rainfall in NYC ranked 2nd…Only behind Ida. That this happened without a tropical system is significant and shows our new reality. The top 3 wettest one hour rainfalls for NYC in the past 156 years have all happened in the past four years.
“The combustible combination of more devastating global warming era hurricanes with a government-imposed decreased ability to study, monitor, forecast and warn for them has us all extremely worried.” 3 other prominent scientists just expressed concern.👇🏼 nbcmiami.com/weather/hurric…
“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States […] nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge’.” — Isaac Asimov
Americans have questions about geoengineering and contrails. They expect honesty and transparency from their government when seeking answers. For years, people who asked questions in good faith were dismissed, even vilified by the media and their own government. This ends today.
Not that y’all didn’t know this already (I’m sure you’re pretty tired of my incessant grumbling over the last many months) but…
One of the comments that struck me in yesterday's call is how @NOAA cuts are already affecting our forecast capabilities. According to 45-year hurricane veteran Dr. Frank Marks, the staff needed to fly NOAA Hurricane Hunters is down 50% this year. More ⬇️ michaelrlowry.substack.com/p/top-hurrican…
Following TX officials' live briefing, I'll be on @MSNBC during the 11 o'clock hour (ET).
I was invited again as an expert on @CNN for @TheArenaCNN with @kasie Hunt. I discussed the increasing frequency of rain 'bombs' due to the warming atmosphere, what cuts to NOAA / NWS meant (or didn't) for the #TexasFloods, and what they'll likely mean for future weather threats
Can’t think of a better year in which the outlook for the rest of the Atlantic hurricane season goes from hyperactive to “slightly above normal”. Caveat: it only takes one, and more storms are undergoing rapid intensification📈 than before we changed the climate.
CSU reduces seasonal #hurricane forecast a bit but still predicts slightly above-normal Atlantic season, with 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 3 major (Category 3+ hurricanes): tropical.colostate.edu/Forecast/2025-… Relatively warm Atlantic and likely absence of #ElNino the primary factors.
“…even when it requires the courage to oppose the destructive power of the princes of this world.” — @Pontifex As my colleagues have heard me say numerous times: This is a time like no other to be courageous.

This past week, visualized through river gauges. All 1,000-year #flood events. #Chicago metro also had an extreme flood event last night too, but fortunately rivers are holding. *Hill Country, Texas *Chapel Hill, North Carolina *Ruidoso, New Mexico
Tried, unsuccessfully, to find gaps in coverage from NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) Station WWF90 located between Kerrville and the worst flooding in Kerr County TX. NWR saves lives and it's important to have multiple ways of being warned about increasingly frequent severe weather.

Coming up just past 7:30 ET I’ll be on with @ErinBurnett on @CNN on the #TexasFloods
