Thrilled to share the final version of my postdoc project, out today in @Nature! We investigated the Bil system – a ubiquitin-like antiphage defense system – and discovered a new defense mechanism! More info in the thread below 👇 nature.com/articles/s4158…
🧬🧬 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙩!!🧬🧬 Latest collab with the amazing Ming Li & Yue Feng labs! How do phages bypass multi-layered defenses in bacteria? Spoiler: with equally complex anti-defenses!! 🧵👇 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
I'm excited to present my work at the IIMCB in Warsaw! Details and a Zoom link below 👇
We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming scientific seminar by @Jens_Hoer 🗓️23.01.2025 🕘09:15 AM CET 💻Join us on Zoom: bit.ly/3NxdIbY #IIMCBseminar #IIMCBonlineSeminarSeries
I’ve met so many amazing people here but it’s clearly time to go. I hope you’ll consider joining us at the Other Place now to rebuild our community.
Excited to share our recent review on S. pneumoniae in @NatureRevMicro nature.com/articles/s4157…
Phage vs. Bacteria: New findings! Phages use their own tRNAs to evade bacterial defenses like retrons and PrrC. Huge thanks to Azam for his hard work! in @NatureComms nature.com/articles/s4146…
Interested in phage therapy? TWINCORE is hosting a mini-symposium on these “microbe eaters” & their role in infection research & medicine on November 13. Speakers include @Jens_Hoer & @Milan_Gerovac. Guests are welcome, and registration is not required! twincore.de/en/events/news…
Exciting news! I started the junior research group 'Complexes in Phage-infected Cells' at Helmholtz Centre for Infection research @Helmholtz_HZI looking forward to explore new jumbo phage biology. We’re hiring! Join us for a PhD position.
This is a very important study! Congrats to all authors 👏
Out @NatureMicrobiol, we predicted phage-bacteria interactions in E. coli species using only genomic information. Adsorption, not defense systems, is the main driver at this scale (relevant for a phage therapy context), leading to tailored cocktails! nature.com/articles/s4156… 🧵👇
I am very proud to share our paper on Tad1/Tad2 sponges, which appeared to be multifunctional anti-defense proteins that inhibit many different signaling-based immunity systems!💫 nature.com/articles/s4158…
🚨New preprint from our lab! We map the RNA interactions in E. coli infected by lambda, revealing an RNA-driven regulatory layer in phage-host dynamics. We find a phage-encoded sRNA hijacking host replication machinery, impacting the phage cycle.#microbiology #phages @MeetingRna

Fancy a postdoc in Munich? For a collaborative project between @SorekLab and @hornung_lab on antiviral innate immunity, we are looking for exceptional candidates with skills in immunology / biochemistry / computational biology. More details here: genzentrum.uni-muenchen.de/career/postdoc…
1/5 Big news from Aguilar Lab! Check out our first preprint! We’ve developed a new prostate organoid model to crack the mystery of E. coli prostatitis, a common, tough-to-treat infection in men. Our model reveals how these bacteria get in and thrive. #UPEC #Organoids #UTI
Prostate-specific membrane receptor PPAP facilitates E. coli invasion of luminal prostate cells via FimH binding biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… #biorxiv_molbio
I am excited to finally share this preprint from @JoergLab. We've developed a reporter assay to enable high throughput discovery of carriers for ASOs into bacteria. This was a challenging and exciting journey for me, from MedChem/ChemBio into Mol/SynBio.

Received some wise words from the incredible Katalin Karikó today @EMBO! A reminder to dream big, work with joy, and be careful with your RNA in the lab :) #EMBOat60
Did you know that bacteria remember their past for many generations? In this new preprint from us (@VillaniAlexis and Senen Mendoza) and Banin lab (@ShmidovE ), we reveal the "how?" and "why?" underlying a long-standing mystery in bacterial memory. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
We discovered a new immune signaling molecule: N7-cADPR N7-cADPR is produced by phage-stimulated TIR proteins. It activates a bacterial caspase, which then degrades essential proteins to curb infection Preprint: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… Congrats @FrancoisRousset & @IlyaOsterman
Such a nice study! Congrats @FrancoisRousset and @IlyaOsterman!! 👏
