In my latest for @ForeignAffairs, I examine why #Iran didn’t step in to prevent Assad’s downfall, the challenges Tehran faces as #Syria breaks away from its orbit, and how it might adapt to a post-Assad era 👇 foreignaffairs.com/syria/how-iran…
📢NEW article from the series ‘Evolving Turkey–Iran relations and implications for regional reordering’ @natasabanadze (@CHRussiaEurasia) discusses how Russia, Turkey and Iran are reshaping the South Caucasus 🧵 kalam.chathamhouse.org/articles/how-r…
« The latest events in Suweida therefore demonstrate, once again, that Syria is not witnessing a democratic and inclusive political transition. Instead, there is an attempt – which is far from complete – to build a new authoritarian regime led by HTS… » newarab.com/opinion/syria-…
Me in @ForeignPolicy. The Trump administration's claim that Iran would need "years" to rebuild its previous nuclear program is like asserting that an unlocked bank vault would be impervious to a cyberattack. It’s true but misses the point. (Link 👇)
NEW: There's an intensifying battle inside Iran for the soul and direction of the country. The war with Israel may have sparked rally-around-the-flag effect, but the political establishment remains torn with Pezeshkian caught in middle. Great overview: amwaj.media/en/media-monit…
Dear @amberinzaman thank you my friend. Latest information: Paris meeting had been Postponed as “Parties too far apart”. 🇫🇷 Trying to hold it “in few days”.
Dear @ibrahimhamidi as we first reported on Monday al-monitor.com/originals/2025… the mtg in Paris was likely to happen but has now been postponed due to the events in Suwayda. Here we reported the details of the Damascus mtg which started well then turned sour al-monitor.com/originals/2025…
Long been apparent that Israel wants a Lebanon-style setup with the IRGC: namely a one-way ceasefire. Covert ops allow Israel to continue attacks without crossing threshold of military action that'd collapse the truce. Also convenient given Iran's inability to respond in kind.
"For more than two weeks, mysterious explosions and fires have erupted across Iran, setting ablaze apartment complexes and oil refineries, a road outside a major airport and even a shoe factory" The ceasefire with Israel is a "fragile suspension" nytimes.com/2025/07/23/wor…
The experience with Iran and Russia makes it abundantly clear: while oil sanctions are good for restructuring oil flows around geopolitical relationships, they fall short on changing state behavior. Lessons for US policy on decoupling from China. My latest for @ForeignPolicy

NEW: When Iran and the E3 meet on Fri, focus will likely be on avoiding making things worse (with snapback) not on making things better. Informed sources confirm WSJ report that E3 have tabled suggestion for extension of snapback, which expires in Oct. amwaj.media/en/media-monit…

In my interview, I discussed the long road of Iran’s arms purchases from China: – Pre-2015: UNSC sanctions blocked deals – 2015: Iran-China fighter jet talks failed over payment—Tehran offered oil – 2020: UN arms embargo expired, but U.S. sanctions kept China hesitant – If…

This narrative on snapback illegitimacy was long expected and is now in full swing. Curious to see if (when) Russia and China pick it up. To be clear, the narrative doesn’t hold water. Iran can’t just unilaterally decide that others are no longer party to the JCPOA. 1/
