Today, I watched the DPD van drive down my street without stoppinge whilst I got a 'cannot deliver, no house number' update on the tracking. Yesterday, home and waiting, it was 'delivery attempted, customer not home'. I wonder what tomorrow shall bring in this comedy.
I've written a brief response to this piece by Profs Gareth Owen @kesleeman @Capacitylaw, highlighting similarities between #assistedsuicide and #euthanasia as a social movement and medical sects and quackery. #MAID #assisteddying bmj.com/content/389/bm…
Is assisted dying a treatment? This question is not just interesting philosophically - it has important practical implications in terms of clinical practice and law. New BMJ Opinion by Prof Gareth Owen, Prof @Capacitylaw and me. Free link bmj.com/cgi/content/fu…
“When mental illness is repeatedly framed in the context of suffering, the framing effect could serve to reinforce notions that life with severe mental illness is not worth living,” the report says.

In March 2027, #euthanasia becomes available in Canada for people with only a mental illness. MP @AndrewLawton is one of the people behind #BillC218, which will repeal #MAID for mental illness, and speaks eloquently and bravely from his experience.
I almost died by suicide fifteen years ago while battling depression. If the expansion of MAID coming into force in 2027 were in place then, I'd likely be dead right now. Today, I'm launching the #IGotBetter campaign to keep hope alive for people living with mental illness.
What obligation does a public body have to report possible lawbreaking to police? #MAID

The speed at which you're forced to use a new app for something no one asked for, and the speed at at which that app produces a 'rate me' pop up exceeds that of light.
“Should we expand eligibility for MAID?” Read my @albertaviews exchange with Nursing Prof Donna Wilson who says #MAID #euthanasia needs to be expanded ‘because people want it’. I argue we need to focus on protection, not promote death further as therapy albertaviews.ca/should-we-expa…

🚨 NEW: The Modernisation Committee is planning to change Parliament's outdated and "confusing" language over fears it alienates the public Terms such as Bill (proposed law), Division (vote), and Early Day Motions (used by MPs to raise issues) could all change [@thetimes]
This is outrageous and typical of the promoters of the bill. IT IS NOT FOR PEOPE FACING CERTAIN AND SEVERE SUFFERING. There’s nothing about certainty or suffering in the bill. It is for anyone whom 2 docs think has a 51% chance of dying within 6 months - including those who want…

The #AssistedDyingBill does not include a requirement for suffering. Those supporting this bill is for suffering are gravely mistaken about the bill.
It is absolutely necessary that all vulnerable groups express their legit fears & concerns. However, this bill is specifically for people with fewer than 6 mths to live. To oppose it is to support the continuation of the unnecessary & most grave suffering of those people.
I'm not religous and my criticisms of #euthanasia and #assistedsuicide are rooted in direct personal experience and professional academic analysis. But this is a good thread, with very strong arguments about the changes to society that #assisteddying or #MAID may reflect.
"Now, splendidly, everything had become clear. The enemy at last was plain in view, huge and hateful, all disguise cast off. It was the Modern Age in arms." After this week I feel like Evelyn Waugh at the time of the Nazi-Soviet Pact in 1939. The politics of 'progress' has…
A word from a Canadian crip to those who fought on the right side & lost today in UK. This is devastating for disabled people. Whatever you feel or don't feel today is just the beginning. I urge you to find ways to support each other - including those who say they're 'fine.'
The presumption of capacity (all adults are presumed to have mental capacity for every decision they take, from serious to trivial) is essential in everyday life. But it would have strengthened this Bill to have reversed it for the test of capacity to decide on assisted dying
🚨 24 has been defeated. 266 v 213 Doctors and the panel will presume capacity unless shown otherwise. It will not have to be formally assessed for a decision to end your life.
My poor father was openly suicidal and in crisis when he was approved and killed through Canada's #MAID. People do not usually express a wish to die when the are not in crisis. #AssistedDying seeks people in crisis almost by definition. #assistedsuicide #assisteddyingbill
Chelsea shares the dangers of offering euthanasia as an option in the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill when we should be offering support. #VoteNO
"Please don't make lethal medications available to us in our most despairing moments." It's as simple as that. Chelsea has been a tireless advocate for women with anorexia.
I know it’s hard to imagine someone with anorexia asking for assisted death. But please listen to the 281 of us who know this illness from the inside - who were once told we were “untreatable,” “treatment-resistant,” or, “likely to die.” We’re simply asking for basic…
