Current undergrads are as smart as past undergrads in my experience. But they are subject to unprecedented pressures not to treat academic excellence as the basic point of university study. A good maxim in academic life is never to blame the students, better look to ourselves.
This is not the case with almost all my philosophy undergrads, who are smart and hard working student. They typically read lengthy complex texts and are prepared to discuss them in class. Sure there are outliers but for the most part they read and read well.
I have some new followers, so thought I might mention that this book is now out, has had positive reviews in TLS, The Spectator, and The Wall Street Journal, and I think would be a good summer read, if I do say so myself: pauldrybooks.com/products/friez…
